What was the role of music in the early years of your life? I started learning piano at age 4, and saxophone around age 11. My dad introduced me to Beatles and Stones records and my mum introduced me to jazz. My step grandma used to play first violin for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and with her influence, classical music also played a big role in those early years.
What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
I saw Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Orchestra at an open air concert, when I was 8. With my mum’s encouragement, I went backstage to talk with Wynton. I told him I was learning to play piano. He told me to keep practising. Those words really stuck with me. I met him again two decades later, and thanked him for his advice. The first rock concert I attended was Jet, supported by The Pictures and Dallas Crane at Festival Hall in Melbourne. I bought an electric guitar shortly after!
Describe your creative process.
It varies. Sometimes the melody will come to me first, other times it might be lyrics or just a rhythm. I try to record an idea as soon as it comes to me, whether on my phone or on my laptop, and I’ll file it away and return to it at a later point. For Sunshine/Dialogue I ended up stitching a lot of those ideas together. You never really know what might come of an idea. That, to me, really is the exciting bit.
What musician do you admire most and why? I love artists that push boundaries and don’t sit still within the confines of their comfort zones. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Deerhoof, David Bowie and The Beatles are artists that immediately spring to mind. I don’t think it would come as a huge surprise that they’re huge influences on my work.
What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? Probably the biggest challenge I’ve faced honestly is the fact that I refuse to be tied down to any one style or genre. In this age of algorithms, I’m almost certainly penalised for that, because it becomes hard to define what I do and recommend me to fans of similar artists.
What are your plans for the coming months? I’m actually relocating to Singapore in a few weeks. So once I’ve settled in, I hope to buy a new guitar, upgrade my recording set up and get to work on my next album.
Do you have any artistic collaboration plans? I love collaborating with other artists. I don’t have anyone specifically in mind at the moment, but I’m sure something will come about, sooner rather than later.

Describe your creative process.
I listen to beats from YouTube or beats producers send me till I find my favorite one at the moment. Then I start writing, coming up with different things. It usually takes me a couple minutes to finish writing a song. Then when I’m done with that one I go beat hunting again. Until I find the one I like the most, write something to it, repeat, then just take ’em to the studio & lay’ em down, get it mixed & mastered till it’s ready for release. Sometimes I just like to go to the studio, listen to beats & come up with something while I’m in the booth.

Is there a story behind your stage name?
I mean my stage name is just my name Alia, Egyptian which in Arabic means at a high or powerful level or supreme. I think as truthful as my work and art is I wouldn’t go for anything but my name, the honesty.
Where do you find inspiration?
I would say my personal experiences and interactions in life, my emotions and feelings is what I connect with – music is my way of communicating in this world. I do find inspiration in other art forms whether it may be films or such, I draw from my own reality; love, politics/world, self etc…
What was the role of music in the early years of your life?
It played on a lot of roles, it got me through a lot I suppose, and also gave me a fondness of memories. I didn’t enter the music world till over a year and a half ago or so now, but I knew my role in life was to be in it.
I always connected with music from an early age, whether it was belting Whitney Houston or Etta James, to dancing as a child and singing Disney theme songs – I always found it as a release and such beautiful art.
Are you from a musical or artistic family?
I would say yes, even if they do not have careers as such within it. My mother to this day has always been the biggest fan of music and sang herself in choirs when I was little. I remember vividly going to those shows and standing on the back of chairs so eager to watch and excited for her!
My father has a huge love for composers and classical music, taught me the love for many Soundtracks in some of the best films, Gladiator, Seven Years In Tibet, Out of Africa etc… this gave me another viewpoint I would say into music, how you can carry emotion and touch people without words, it hit different and still does for me, I have a huge love for classical music.
My brother, was a left-handed guitar player (gifted by a very close family friend that gave me one that I use still to this day for all my songs) he would play with his mates (band) when he was younger, write some of his own and cover – I would say he taught me the love for a lot of Indie bands from the late 90s to early 00s but also artists like the likes of Eminem.
Then my sister probably had the strongest effect on me in many ways including music, the power in her voice was something I was always dreaming of reaching, incredible singer – she had a small career in music I would say coming from Kuwait and recording over her in London (believe in other countries also) I recall being in a studio with her once (in Islington I was maybe 12 or 13) and watching her and absorbing as much as I could.
Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?
I don’t think there was really an inspiration of who made me be a part of this industry, I think in terms of the art there’s an inspiration but everything felt very natural for me to do this – every other work or life pushed me more towards this, everything else felt very uncomfortable and I had a breaking point less than a year or so ago. I thought to myself and within if I don’t leap, I will never know who I am as an artist or the life I truly want for myself.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?
I’m not trained to put it simply, singing I’ve just sung and listened to artists who inspired me from an early age to now, I try to push myself with that and evolve and grow – see what I can challenge myself to do next. Writing is the same, actually wasn’t a great student in terms of my writing, and also got a lot of negative criticism on my poetry as a kid.
Which never stop me, I just kept going, I was never good with explaining or spelling/grammar – and I knew that and still do. But I use my own power within my words and thoughts to create the art I wish to, again I challenge and push myself to do better.
Anyone that knows me, knows I am very hard on myself. With my guitar playing I had an ex-partner once who taught me one song on the guitar Daughter – Youth track, I learnt and started to reverse it and play it as fast as I could, but confidence still lacked so I put it down for a long time… until lockdown hit did I truly pick up the guitar and just gave it everything I got, and taught myself as many chords as I needed merging my poetry and beginning my songwriting – I am trying to learn the piano at the moment very early stages but it intrigues me as my ears have learned so much that moving onto the piano is easier then I thought it would be – still more to learn and I am nowhere near where I’d want to be or want to learn as a musician, and I am very excited for this!
What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
Concert I saw a lot and I can’t remember if I am honest, more memories from festivals like the Reading festival, I will forever remember Paramore, and Foo Fighters and Florence and the Machine, and much more – the awe of the performers and showmanship was outstanding, rain – sun – no power – it was mesmerizing.
How could you describe your music?
I would probably go with honest, raw, deep, poetic, comfort.
Describe your creative process.
There is no process … aha! I mean I have ways I do things but I wouldn’t say its a process, I don’t sit down and say I must write or try if that makes sense. I allow my thoughts and feelings to fall out of me, and form together – it is rare that I would edit my work once I have finished it lyrically or rhythm/chords.
Would add instruments on top of course and evolve it, if it needs it or if it can speak by itself then I just leave it… most of my recent knowledge over a year has grown from my soul brother Steven Young a.k.a Mr.Nobody – he’s brought me into my realm of understanding my art more than I ever did before, helping me form into the musician I’ve always dreamt of being.
What is your main inspiration?
Life as simple as that is, but thats what I draw from, the world that I am in.
What musician do you admire most and why?
I admire a lot, the ones who passed and the living from every genre you could think of… but to think of perhaps the ones I always go and connect with I always think of Hans Zimmer and Ludovico Einaudi. You can’t describe their art and what they do and have achieved as musicians/composers – I sometimes write a lot of poetry to their music.
Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?
Definitely, it’s like anything the more you do something, the more you evolve and learn/grow. My vocals are stronger and have wisdom I can feel it, guitar is way more natural for me and comfortable, and the knowledge I have when creating knowing whats right or wrong perhaps and what would be cool to add, I know that’s something I am very proud of.
I have been doing this professionally for perhaps a year or so, so I have lots more time to still discover more!
Who do you see as your main competitor?
I don’t, an artist is an artist. They all have their own journey in life, wish anyone luck in life doing what they love to do, I am not here to compete.
What are your interests outside of music?
I enjoy going to events, exhibitions and gigs – exploring and learning more. Walks, I adore the nature being in a city like London I try to grab any nature I can, heals the mind, even if its to go grab a coffee and sit by myself in a park. Travelling, culture I love with all my heart. I also do a bit of commercial modelling on the side, so a few music videos and tv series I have been in, I enjoy a lot of creative outlets and forms of art/expression.
If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?
Honestly I don’t know,… I’ve always wanted to help people, I got a BA Hons in International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies at London Met University, so I would hope something in that field.
What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?
The funding you need as an artist in this industry, and the fact industries or governments don’t consider it as a real job or even an industry that should be looked after. So many sectors in music are falling because of this, and it saddens me to find out so my artists in this world will never have their voices or creations heard because they aren’t wealthy enough or the Theatre’s in London or wherever in the world get shut down because of costs. It’s something people always need, and I think needs a better solution.
If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?
Labels and how they work, they should never have the right over someones music. It belongs to the artist, even The Beatles for the majority of their career never owned their rights to their own art. I would change their system and how they manage/work with artists, the industry has become a quite toxic one – which I think needs some healing done to it.
Why did you choose this as the title of this project? I choose it, inspiration from Steven, whom I spoke of earlier, I was thinking in my head what should it be, and he mentioned why not “Soho Sessions” it grew on me. As we recorded all the tracks in Soho.
It has a special place in my heart, Soho has always felt like home for me, freedom, and being whoever you want to be. Side A, was a little touch as its the beginning of my music journey and my name ALIA.
What are your plans for the coming months?
I have a incredible gig on the 27th of this month, to support an incredible artist called Nik Sheva at Piano Smithfield, London. I will be going for more shows, and getting more live performances booked. I have a few tracks I have worked with other people on needing finishing.
In September however is where everything will be very interesting and exciting, I have had the beautiful chance to on with Mr. Nobody’s (Steven Young) up-coming music that will be out and this will be a start of another adventure, very different genre to my own – modern psychedelic rock, BUT I connect with it so much and always wanted to make or be apart of music like this! Very proud and grateful I get this opportunity to go on this adventure.

I have a feature on House track “Kinda Mad”‘ (soon to be released) with the astounding up and coming Jazzi Sirus, which I am on their vocally/lyrically and with Mark Fox as the insane musician/producer formed this piece together!
One is a single with this beautiful producer called Austel, who was engineering one night in Stoke Newington and caught my set – we swapped details and kept in touch, she mentioned she’d love to produce one of my songs, and there we go – I found a song I wrote from probably one of my first collections I ever wrote. I am excited to have this piece finished.

Is there a story behind your stage name?
That’s my real name. My band that join me are called The Crown Electric, which was inspired by the name of the company Elvis Presley used to drive trucks for.
Where do you find inspiration/What is your main inspiration?
Anything creative can fuel inspiration. For me it comes from listening to music, reading books, films. As a songwriter I try to keep my antenna up at all times. It gets stored into the subconscious and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to use it in a creative way.
What was the role of music in the early years of your life?/Are you from a musical or artistic family?
I’m originally from Weston-Super-Mare, just south-west of Bristol. Morrissey aptly described it as “a seaside town that forgot to close down”. I’m the youngest of four. My parents grew up in the 60s so as far back as I can remember I was brought up on heavy doses of 50s & 60s rock’n’roll music, especially The Beatles & Elvis Presley.
My two brothers & sister are all musical and I guess my musical influences stemmed from their record collections. So it was the 1950s, 1960s and The Britpop era that soundtracked my upbringing. As I grew into my teens I started to take the lyrical content more seriously, looking for a deeper meaning to the music, which took me to a new dimension when my brother handed me a copy of ‘Blonde On Blonde’ & ‘Blood On The Tracks’ by Bob Dylan. Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen & Townes Van Zandt shortly followed and sent me into orbit. Other songwriter’s such as Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright & Ray Lamontagne would influence me further by the time I recorded my first solo album ‘Lonesome Train’. I first started playing live on the local circuit when I was 14, pubs, weddings, funerals, etc.. The last 15 years has felt somewhat of an apprenticeship which has granted me the tools to do what I do to the best of my ability.
Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?
It was never a conscious decision. I’ve just always loved and been immersed in music, to be the point it would feel alien to spend my life doing anything else.
How did you learn to sing/write/to play?
My older brother Adam taught me my first chords on guitar and also taught me how to play Wonderwall, which was the first song I learned to play. I also had guitar lessons from Cliff Moore (Gary Moore’s brother) at school. Writing and singing came mainly from listening, watching, trying to take in everything.
What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
My first gig was U2 at Earl’s Court in London on the Elevation Tour in 2001.
How could you describe your music?
There’s a real melting pot in there which stems from my influences. It’s impossible for your music not to be tinged in what you love listening to. My second record ‘Alex’ was produced in Berlin by Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and is a very stripped back Americana/folk sounding album.
Whereas my latest record (For Everything Under The Sun) is a 100% electric, full band sound that dips its toes into 1960s rock n roll, 1990s Britpop and psychedelia. The goal is to try and pull all these influences together and create something that has my own identity stamped on it.
Describe your creative process.
It generally starts from sitting down with a guitar or piano and just playing around and if you’re lucky, something reveals itself and there will be a chord progression or melody that I find interesting: which I’ll record into my phone. I trust the process and I find this is where your subconscious takes over. It’s almost as if the magic stuff happens when you’re not thinking about it.
Sometimes they’ll be a certain phrase or words that I like the sound of and again I’ll record that into my phone or write it down, and then you have something to work with. Every songwriter has different approaches and this is what makes it so special. There is no rhyme or reason, but when ‘it’ comes you need to make sure you capture it.

What musician do you admire most and why?
Too many to mention. From a songwriter’s point of view it would be Dylan, Neil Young, Lennon/McCartney, Neil Finn, Ryan Adams. These guys have a body of work I’m can only aspire to reach.
Bruce Springsteen would probably be my pick. Bruce reinvigorates your soul. I’m not religious, but going to see a Springsteen show is like going to church. I recently went to my 14th Springsteen show. 73 years old and still head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to live. Man, are we going to miss him when they stop touring.
Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?
I think I’ve evolved as a musician, I always aim to be as good a songwriter as I can be, so I try to always look forward and always improve on what I’ve done previously. I think there’s a natural evolution if you listen through the records I’ve made. I certainly think my latest album ‘For Everything Under The Sun’ is my strongest piece of work so far. My sources of inspiration and musical influences have evolved over the last few years so it’s only natural that that would have some affect on the music I write.
Who do you see as your main competitor?
I’m never that interested in viewing things that way, I just try to make the best music I can. If anything I always compare with the greats, because ultimately that’s who I want to be competing with, otherwise what’s the point? So that gives me the level of where it is I want to reach and gives me motivation for trying to improve and hone my craft.
What are your interests outside of music?
I love football and Aston Villa. I try and watch them at Villa Park as much as I can when I’m not gigging. I also love travelling, reading, films, spending time with my wonderful wife and dog.
If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?
I honestly have no idea. I’ve had a few unsuccessful part time jobs growing up. I was sacked from McDonalds after 6 days for sending out a bunch of Chicken burgers without the chicken in! Thank God I can sing and play guitar!
What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?
The biggest challenge as an artist not signed to a major label is essentially being heard. There’s so much white noise out there. In this digital age, with streams and algorithms essentially dictating all, it’s easy to be drawn into that and forget about the music. One of the biggest challenges is financial. The way the majority of people consume music now has changed so less money is being made by selling your records.
For me it’s always been about performing live and creating a body of work that people will listen to holistically. I started playing live in pubs when I was fourteen years old, and have been fortunate to make a living doing that, for me it has been an apprenticeship where you learn your trade and craft, but it has been soul destroying at times. You have to keep believing in yourself and keep working as hard as you can.
If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?
I think there needs to be more support for independent artists and venues in this country. More often than not you hear grass roots venues closing down due to rising costs, and it really does feel in this country that music, as well as the arts in general are taken for granted.
There are a huge amount of talented musicians and songwriters in the UK but unfortunately it’s not financially sustainable and they end up working shitty jobs. You can earn far more money playing covers in pubs than playing your original music at a festival and that isn’t right. More respect, more financing, more opportunities.
Why did you choose this as the title of this project?
The new single ‘Idiot Station’ is about the vacuous nature of mainstream media.
The lack of substance, depth, or feeling being fed to us constantly through all avenues. On TV it’s all meaningless ‘reality’.
Then you flick over and there’s some deluded political fuckwit covering his/her/their arse.
Big radio filled with the same empty, and the same cast of maybe 50 artists; is this really all we’ve got?? Equally, the song could be interpreted as a love falling apart. So the title is pretty self explanatory!
What are your plans for the coming months?
I’ll be playing a bunch of festivals this summer, including Valley Fest, Glastonbury, Lakefest and Shiiine On Weekender. I’ll also be playing a few record stores and some shows towards the end of the year. We’re also planning on recording a live album in the Autumn.
Do you have any artistic collaboration plans?
I’ve recently been supporting Marc Almond on his UK & European Tour, and Marc has invited me to sing and play on his next album so I’m looking forward to that. I previously collaborated with Bonehead from Oasis and a project called Phoney’s & The Freaks.

What is your stage name
We are called Moose Wrench, and we refer to ourselves as Moose Senior (or Dr. Moose), Moose and Moose Junior. Or sometimes we are all called Dan. Dr. Moose leads the band, writes the material and sings and plays keytar. Moose plays bass and does backing vocals. Moose Junior plays drums and sorts out our backing tracks. You’re talking to Dr. Moose.
Is there a story behind your stage name?
Yes, but it’s a secret. Shh!
Where do you find inspiration?
For this project, the lyrics are inspired from minor everyday inconveniences that disproportionately piss me off. The rhythms are inspired by too many boring Zoom meetings and I tap out cool rhythms with my pens to keep myself amused. The rest is just always wanting to sound like a late 90s Californian alt-metal outfit. Oh, and Hunter S. Thompson.
What was the role of music in the early years of your life? I was always making music and weird sounds. On my first electric organ, there were those drum accompaniment buttons for things like bossa nova and waltz etc. I discovered that if you flicked them all randomly off and on you could create new weird beats. That was an eight year old’s version of what would eventually become Moose Wrench.
Are you from a musical or artistic family? Not really. My grandmother tried to play a bit of organ, which was my first instrument, but no one except me pursued it very far.
Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry? I didn’t really have a choice. I tried to stay away from the biz. But I just had to make music.
How did you learn to sing/write/to play?
I took lessons on electric organ and eventually pipe organ, which I studied at university. The rest I just picked up along the way. I’ve always liked making things up.
What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
I’m from Nova Scotia, Canada and grew up without the internet. No one interesting comes to that neck of the woods, or they didn’t then. The first proper concert I saw was Metallica when I was about 19. I think I nearly died that night.
How could you describe your music?
Dad-bod alt-core…or angry tongue in cheek midlife crisis
Describe your creative process.
For this project, I generally started with a rhythm that I tap out. Then I programme some drums. Add some keytar and and bass. Then think of something that pissed me off recently and write some lyrics about that. Record a demo on my laptop then take it to the band to turn into the magic that is Moose Wrench.
What is your main inspiration?
Minor irritations are endlessly inspiring.
What musician do you admire most and why?
Mike Patton. He’s so restless and inventive. Not to mention hardcore.
Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?
Not sure about evolution, as I don’t think you could say any natural selection occurred! I started off doing classical music, then I was in an alt-metal band, the Ganja Warriors, at university. Then I moved to the UK and got really into EDM and Jungle etc.
Then I played in various bands covering ska, blues, lounge, psychedelic, funk and whatever. Then I pretty much stopped playing. During the pandemic, I decided to start again and produced a solo album of mainly acoustic guitar songs, although with some weird other parts because I can’t help myself. That was two years ago. Now I wanted to create something heavy and shouty again.
Who do you see as your main competitor?
Competitor? I don’t really see things that way. Other then the same problems that have always existed still do. Namely, everyone wants to pigeon hole you and if you don’t fit an easy category, getting gigs or support is pretty tough
What are your interests outside of music?
Fashion. As you can tell.
If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?
Well, my music career wouldn’t pay for itself. I have always worked with music, but more from an educational and research angle.
What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? There’s not a lot out there that’s truly surprising. And a lot of people think they like weird things, but they often have a pretty narrow idea of what weird is.
If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? The creators seem to be the last people to get paid. How messed up is that?
Why did you choose this as the title of this project? The single and eventual album are called Not Dead Yet. It was inspired really by my father becoming very frail and eventually his passing last year. He was going and I wondered if he had any regrets. It was too late to talk to him about it. I wondered if I had any regrets. It turns out I had, or would have, if I didn’t just get up off my fast ass and do something. So I did.
What are your plans for the coming months?
Moose Wrench have recorded six songs this year. They will be release one by one and then packages up as an album. I’m writing material for the next one. Meanwhile, we are looking for cool and exciting gigs.
Do you have any artistic collaboration plans
I have had some thoughts about collaborating with a techno synth enthusiast and perhaps a disco diva. Otherwise a wrestling collaboration could work.
