Brotherly Resonance: Michael Bland and Sonny T’s Journey with (BR)OTHERS

Funk and R&B music fans have a lot to celebrate with the debut single from (BR)OTHERS, the latest music project featuring two super talents, Michael Bland and Sonny T who were well known members of Prince’s R&B band known as the New Power Generation. Venturing into another partnership following the days of yore, the “(Br)other” song is a soulful musical document to be relished by die-hard fans whilst asserting (BR)OTHERS as a power couple still on the rise.

While Bland and T, Minneapolis natives with careers that have been widely successful in pop, rock, and Minnesota’s funk/R&B scene, (BR)OTHERS signifies a creative reunion that is both an organic product of their deep personal friendship and musical kinship. Now they have toured and recorded together with Prince as well as renowned acts such as Corey Wong and Vulfpeck, their symbiotic relationship is obvious. The project’s outer space imagery symbolizes the cosmic dimension of their musical nexus.

Bland being a drummer infused his prodigious talents both in genres while Sonny T founded his roots in local groups like Back to Black and became a perfect fit for the New Power Generation where he connected with Bland. Under the (BR)OTHERS banner on Hygh Tension Records – a great choice because the record label was founded by Ryan Smith from Soul Asylum – the message of unity and courage is ignited.

The pre-release tracks show a smooth fusion of their classic funk rhythm with updated R&B tunes and candid lyrics about their undivided love and commitment to each other. For the fans who have not seen these Minneapolis music gods in person and for the newcomers who are getting to witness their power for the first time (BR)OTHERS will leave a lasting impression.

What is your stage name

(BR)OTHERS.

Is there a story behind your stage name?

The story behind our stage name is that Sonny and i both often feel like strangers on this planet, but less alone when we’re together. Also, there’s an acknowledged psychic exchange between us, while playing together. We often read each other’s minds.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere.

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

The role music has played in my life, all my life, has been immeasurable.

Are you from a musical or artistic family?

I’m sort of from a musical family. My father played organ and piano in church, but his chosen profession was teaching science. When i showed aptitude for drums, he got me a set, lessons and started having me play with him during Sunday service.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

Every musician i met who had something going on or at least a plan to get somewhere inspired me to get into this business and to really take it seriously.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

I learned how to write, play and sing mostly through observation.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?

The first concert i ever saw was Ray Charles. It changed me, forever.

How could you describe your music?

Message music.

Describe your creative process.

I don’t have a particular creative process, as a writer. Sometimes, i hear someone say something and it inspires a melody. Other times, i’m literally just in the loo, sitting there and I begin to hear things.. lol. Seriously, music just comes to me. My antennae is always up.

What is your main inspiration?

Love is my main inspiration.

What musician do you admire most and why?

Sonny is the musician i most admire. His imagination knows no bounds. He’s always encouraging others, musically. And, he takes all musical situations seriously, always gives his best.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

I’ve definitely evolved since the beginning of my career. I’ve become less selfish and more concerned about making things work for everyone else.

Who do you see as your main competitor?

We compete only with ourselves.

What are your interests outside of music?

I’m not sure i have any real interests, outside of music. Music is my life. Everything i have has come from choosing music over everything, but God.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

If i didn’t have a career in music, i’d be a full time dreamer. See what i did, there?

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

There are always disappointments during one’s journey in music. Staying optimistic is a constant battle.

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

If i could change anything about the modern music business, streaming would be outlawed.

Why did you choose this as the title of this project?

Seemed appropriate. Sounded right. The title just seemed to fit the project.

What are your plans for the coming months?

My only plans for the next few months is to make good music.

Do you have any artistic collaboration plans

Yes, there are always plans to collaborate with others. Can’t get into it really, right now.

What message would you like to give to your fans?

We love you and thanks for your continued support!
