Omega Origin is described as your most ambitious release so far. What does this album mean to We Are To Blame, and how do you feel it represents the band today?
It’s a great feeling to finally be able to present what we have been working on for so long, and we are incredibly proud of the album. I Think it shows what we are capable of as a band, and display the width of We Are To Blame while still keeping true to our sound.
The album builds on the direction you explored with Altar while taking the sound further. What changed or developed most for the band during the making of Omega Origin?
The process was pretty similar, but we have been able to finetune it since the release of “Women In This World”. Nothing major, but small things and details that we thought we could take further and improve upon. And it all adds up in the end, a hundred tiny details makes a huge difference in the end!
You bring together melodic death metal, cinematic pop, electronic and symphonic elements. What attracts you to combining such different sounds within your music?
I Believe it’s a blend of the freedom and the challenge behind it. Freedom in the way that we are not limited in what we can do in terms of sounds and instruments, but are free to explore and try new things. Challenging in the way that it can be hard to find a cohesive sound with that much freedom, but i Believe that we have managed to find a sonic footprint that says “This is We Are To Blame”.
Omega Origin explores the idea of “the beginning of the end” and a world shaped by uncertainty and darkness. What inspired this concept, and how did it influence the songs?
We live in a World of turmoil, and it’s hard not to be affected by it. I Believe art is a reflection of the artist and the World around them, and if we are struggling it is going to shine through. But in that dark space, there can also be hope. Hope that tomorrow might be better than yesterday.
There is a strong contrast between clean vocals, growls and screams throughout the album. How do you decide which vocal approach best suits each song?
We don’t really have a formula for it, but in all cases we try to serve the song and let it tell us where it needs to go. That mentality goes for Everything regarding the Music; let the song guide us where it needs to go.
Most of the album began with ideas from Johan Karlsson, while “She Is Me” was written by Alice Hartvig. How does the songwriting process change when different members bring their own ideas to the band?
Alice definitely have Another way of Writing Music than me, but i also Think that is one of We Are To Blames strengths; the fact that we have such different approaches and influences, yet still manage to find a way to make it sound like us.
The album features powerful riffs, atmospheric textures and big melodic choruses. Which elements were most important to you when creating the overall sound of Omega Origin?
For me, Writing memorable songs is the most important thing. Everything else is there to enhance that, and to help the song get there. I, like others, still listen to songs from my childhood and teen years. Imagine someone else feeling the same about your own Music in 20-30 years, isn’t that an exciting thought?
You handled the production, while the mixing and mastering involved Johan Karlsson and Sebastian “Seppo” Lindgren. What was the collaborative process like from recording through to the final master?
Working with Seppo was great! Besides being a fantastic drummer and human being, he is a great producer and engineer. Having someone that understood the sound and vibe, but also have more distance to the actual material was refreshing and helped us reach where we wanted to go. And i Believe that we made each other better while working together as well.
Three singles, “Poison,” “Alone” and “Life Lost Love,” were released ahead of the album, each with its own music video. How did these songs help introduce listeners to the world and themes of Omega Origin?
I Think all Three songs shows different sides of We Are To Blame, while also giving an insight to the general sound of the band. “Poison” is a straightforward sing-along rocker, “Alone” shows more of our melodeath side and “Life Lost Love” shows more of the blend of different vibes, which is also a big part of We Are To Blame.
You have said that Omega Origin is the perfect representation of where the band is today. Now that the album is out, what do you hope listeners understand about We Are To Blame and where you are heading next?
I hope that the album shows us as a band and what we are, and that our listeners can hear the passion and love that we have put into our Music. And if nothing else, give them an hour of enjoyment and happiness in an increasingly dark World.
Right now we are working on promoting the album, finding our way to people who enjoys our music. Hopefully we will be able to get out and play more liveshows, and of course starting writing new music!
