Kingfisha is back with “Highly Recommended,” their first new album in ten years. The Brisbane band has been developing their style for 20 or more years and their own journey has not dampened their style’s spirit.
The music is a fusion of dub, reggae and electronics, offering a smooth bass heavy groove that is easy to enjoy. The song starts with a bassline that’s quite deep and the beat is pretty steady from the beginning, giving it an easy-going, but entertaining, vibe. Catchy synth lines, dark drum beats and playful electronic touches complement Anthony Forrest’s smooth lead vocals. There’s a nice rhythm with Melodica adding some extra character, and the solid dub groove keeps things rolling.

The depth and melody of one of the songs is one of the greatest strengths. The production is rich in detail, but never overpowering, allowing each to take its space. It’s a groove that makes you wanna move, whether it’s in your headphones at home, in a club or on a festival stage.
Kingfisha have plenty to celebrate after a win at Triple J Unearthed Roots, as well as touring to Woodford Folk Festival and BluesFest. “Highly Recommended” is a sure thing to their signature style and a reminder to anyone why this band is still worth listening to.
