“Unikat” Sets the Tone for an Exciting New Album

Fred Denote is back and making a powerful statement! The first single off his upcoming fourth album, “Unikat,” is everything fans have been waiting for. Teaming up again with producer and drummer NO.mad900, the Cologne-based duo brings their signature rap-rock crossover sound to life in a way that is bold, fresh, and full of energy.

The word “Unikat” means unique, and that is exactly what this track is. Tight grooves, punchy guitar riffs, and powerful percussion drive the song forward with relentless energy. Performing in German adds a sharp, distinct character that makes every word hit harder.

The chemistry between Fred Denote and NO.mad900 is undeniable. Their guitars and drums lock in perfectly, and the surprising guitar twists keep things exciting without ever losing the groove.

This is not just a single. It is an opening chapter. Get ready, because you are being urshered into a world of endless euphoria.

For readers meeting you for the first time, who is Fred Denote, and how would you describe your sound in your own words?

I am a hip-hop musician from Cologne and have been releasing German-language music under the name Fred Denote for over a decade. I also play guitar, which has a big influence on my music. The sound of my albums therefore mixes rap with genres such as rock ‘n’ roll and soul. But now I also make a lot of Cologne pop/hip-hop music.

“Unikat” is such a striking title. What does the word mean to you personally, and why did you choose it for this single?
In the song, “Unikat” (English: Unique) primarily stands for my desire to stand out with my sound in a music landscape that, unfortunately, is dominated by the mainstream, leading to too much musical uniformity, where everyone imitates each other in order to be successful. On the other hand, it’s also meant as a little wink, because of course everyone is unique in some way.

If you had to introduce “Unikat” to someone who has never heard your music before, how would you describe the track and its vibe?
“Unikat” is a stormy crossover track that really takes the “rap’n’roll” sound I make to the extreme. If someone wants to get into my solo music, I would show them this track so they know what to expect.

You and NO.mad900 have been working together since 2015. What keeps this partnership so strong after three albums and now a fourth on the way?
We both share a passion for making music, and we found each other in this sound because we developed it together, so to speak. This has led to a self-image that we are simply continuing with and are now working on a new project.

“Unikat” blends rap and rock in a very organic way. How do you balance both worlds without losing the edge of either genre?
That actually comes very intuitively. I’ve never really thought about it. It just happens during the musical process. Not everything I do solo is rock-heavy. Sometimes elements of soul and singer/songwriter music flow into my songs.

You grew up on both Hip-Hop and Rock. Was there a specific moment when you realized, “Okay, I want to fuse these worlds and create rap’n’roll”?
That also came about intuitively. I wanted to do something with guitar, but I wanted to rap on it. That’s how the first album came about, and somehow we continued down that path. The rock element became more prominent over time, simply because I like rapping to that kind of music.

Genre boundaries are getting blurry these days. Do you see yourself as part of a new wave of crossover artists, or are you deliberately trying to stand apart from any scene?
I would say that I’m part of a scene that stands out with crossover music. Unfortunately, this scene isn’t particularly big in Germany. I would like to see more of it and for crossover to gain more attention in Germany again.

Is there a particular line or moment in the song that feels most personal or powerful to you? Why does that part stand out?
Maybe the line “Das ist kein Battlerap, das hier sind Hard Facts / Ihr schreibt mit Geistern, ich in Kneipen meine Parts weg”. It means “This is no battle rap, these are hard facts / You write with ghosts, I write my parts in bars”. Something like that, haha, doesn’t sound so good in English.

But it sums up pretty well how things often are in the hip-hop scene these days. Many people have their lyrics written for them, which used to be different. But it is what it is.
On a musical level, I love the solo in the bridge. In fact, I only played the guitars for the hook and the verses; NO.mad900 conjured up this solo.

How important is it for you that listeners understand the lyrical message, versus just feeling the energy and groove?
I think “Unikat” is primarily an impulsive “here I am again” song, without any big or significant message. For me, it’s about people celebrating the sound and feeling the music. That’s why I would say that stands out more in this case.

“Unikat” is the first glimpse of your upcoming fourth album. What can fans expect from this new project sonically and thematically?
The new album will have quite a different sound. Besides “Unikat,” there are one or two rap-rock numbers, but there will also be quieter songs and even some more pop-oriented stuff. Let yourself be surprised.

How does this new album differ from your previous three? Are there risks you’re taking now that you wouldn’t have taken earlier in your career?
I feel like the overall sound of the album has become even more unique. “Unikat” is one of the more conventional tracks, but there will also be a few songs that really stand out. I used to worry a lot about how people would react to the sound. I think with this new project, I often trusted my intuition and thought: That sounds very unique, but that’s what makes it special.

As an artist who goes against the grain of the charts, how do you define success for yourself in 2026 and beyond?
Good question. As Fred Denote, I basically live two lives. One is the Cologne hip-hop pop songs that we’re doing a lot of at the moment and which are very popular with the masses. But what appeals to me even more personally are these album projects. Telling stories and creating my own sounds is my passion, and it’s not necessarily equated with success.

For new listeners discovering you through this track, where should they go next in your catalog to fully understand who Fred Denote is?
People who like “Unikat” should definitely check out my latest album, “Jumpin’ Jeck Flash.” In a way, it was the conclusion of my first three records and the thing I’m still proud of today.
