Swedish producer duo Anwai have officially re-emerged from a five-year hiatus to release their brand new double single, “4ever HD”. Mons Lorenzen and Amadeus friends and musical partners for twelve years stepped away recently as they both became fathers. Thankfully, their trademark DIY charm survived the break intact. They still trade Logic and Ableton project files between Stockholm and Västerås, wrapping up their final mixing sessions at a local pub. That laid-back workflow, which previously earned them placements on Netflix’s Degrassi: The Next Class, somehow continues to breed deeply authentic magic.
They describe their stylistic lane as “trip-pop,” mixing indietronica and trip hop together into raw, emotive spaces. Consider the first track, “SOMETHING NEW.” It tackles the intense desperation of a crumbling romance and the painful desire to postpone an inevitable abandonment. I actually felt a quiet panic creeping into my chest as I listened. A gentle, cyclical mid-tempo melody slowly expands around a heavy, thumping rhythmic pulse. Deep low-frequency layers gradually build a swaying groove. Suddenly, the floor falls out, abandoning you entirely inside a sparse, echoing core.
The second track, “FLWRS”, wrestles with the ensuing emotional wreckage. It perfectly bottles the exhausting, looping frustration of holding onto past intimacy. You fiercely wish you could hit delete on a person to escape the sorrow, yet you secretly keep clinging to them. Breathy, delicate vocals melt over a slow, laid-back beat. A warm chord progression gives the heartbreak a surprisingly soothing chillwave finish.
Both songs explore profound relational grief while offering the warmest sonic comfort imaginable. Why do we always seem to find such intense shelter inside the very melodies that break our hearts?
