Zachary Mason turns his gaze back to the stars again with “Man Of The Universe,” which is a fun, retro-inspired Space Rock/Psychedelic/Punk/Classic Rock jam. Growing out of the Guildford environment, Mason has long been interested in science fiction and has taken inspiration from the style of old Sci-Fi magazines and the pulp era of story-telling.
It’s the story of a swaggering space traveller, flying a fearsome space ship, deflecting aliens and space pirates and attracting fans in the process. Smartly, Mason doesn’t go too far with the idea and instead adopts a playful, engaging tone.
Structurally, both the track starts with a measured opening and progresses into full-bodied, drum-driven rock number. The arrangement’s propulsion is made up of angular guitar work, bright instrumental tones and psychedelic flourishes, while Mason’s warm vocal delivery imparts an unmistakably 1980s feel, conjuring up references such as Dire Straits, New Order and The Killers.
Stuart Epps, another producer, offers drums, bass, organ and backing vocals to add depth and polish to the recording. Overall a confident and well-crafted entry in Mason’s ongoing investigation of space-themed rock, which is a blend of story-telling imagination and real melodic and rhythmic power.
