Jess Porter

What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?
A singer, a songwriter, guitarist.

Who Is Jess Porter And What's His New Release About

What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your career/profession/ field feels like?
It’s hard for me to know what genre my solo music falls into. I guess more than anything it’s the most personal music that I write. I started writing my first solo material when travelling the world in 2011 from a desire to tell stories about the places I visited but also the internal journey I was taking. Sonically it’s usually based around a set of chords written on acoustic guitar or piano and arranged for a band from there.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
I love artists who blend contemporary technology and progressive attitudes with classic songwriting style – artists like Bon Iver, St Vincent and Yeo are some of my current faves. Paul McCartney is probably my pinnacle of inspiration (for talent and hustle).

What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
My first serious project was a progressive metal band called Double Handed. We formed in 2003 and put out an EP and an album. They’re actually not bad, if not a little pretentious.

How many projects do you have so far?
Lost count. I have some favorites though. Check out inuette and 1.1 Immermann.

What is this new release about?
I’ve had Patterns brewing half-finished for a couple of years actually – it was one of those songs where the words kinda fall out but you’re not exactly sure what it’s about. I dusted it off a little while ago and after honing the lyrics realized how strongly I resonated with them. It’s about seeing someone make the same mistakes and not being able to do anything to stop it – you need to just let them crash and burn until they learn their lesson. I’m including myself in this group of course.

Who and how many people worked on it?
I was living back in Adelaide for part of the pandemic and while there I took the chance to work with the wonderful Nick Russell, who’s an old friend and collaborator. He helped me sharpen up the song, played drums and produced it, while I performed the rest of the instruments. That’s it – just a dynamic duo on this one.

What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?
Live shows in Melbourne again finally – and hopefully beyond! I’ve got some other songs coming out in the next few months too, keep your ears open.

Conclusion : Songs are powerful tools for expression. They can evoke feelings, tell stories, and break the hearts of listeners. A great lyric is one that will stay in your head and one that tells a poignant story or serves as an important reminder. Great melodies that also accompany fantastic lyrics are equally important. And this sublime release from Jess Porter is one to stay replaying in our heads.
