Van Elst Shares An Amazing Single Dubbed ‘Où Es-Tu’

This melancholy album extends Van Elst‘s reputation as a Dutch electronic dream pop musician who is able to create a musically peaceful but enigmatic world inside his tracks.

After spending a year on the road as the drummer for the Psych Trio, Frank Van Der Ploeg, better known as VAN ELST, took his training in Psychedelic Rock and reshaped it into a style that he calls “dark, dreamy, electronic, but beautiful.”

The gothic titans have taught VAN ELST a thing or two about creating affecting, evocative music. His music continues his fusion of melancholy synth lines, bass-heavy electronics, atmospheric dream pop melodies, and traces of psychedelia, drawing the listener into the artist’s already genuine universe.

“Where Are You?” (Où Es-Tu) is his most recent single. The song has haunting voice samples, driving rhythms, and rumbling bass tones. Eldorado’s vocals, together with Jasper Bullynck’s (Oscar and the Wolf) complex guitar parts, dance around the ethereal analogue synth harmonies. They add to the song as a whole, making it stand out more vividly from its otherwise dreary setting.

In a candid interview, Van shared his musical inspirations and goals with us, in addition to providing us with specifics about his newest song.

What is your real and official showbiz name?
My real name is Frank but I go under the artist name VAN ELST

What drew you to music production in the first place?
I think it was when I was around 17 years old and I and my little sister and were recording covers of blink 182 and guns n roses to send to my mother who wasn’t living in the same country as us.

I had my very first MacBook that time around and we used garage band. It was all pretty lo-fi and low key but I think that got me inspired to continue to eventually write my own material. The feeling of recording something and producing it still feels quite magical to me.

What or whom do you go to for inspiration or motivation?
I have a lot of fellow artist friends who I met along the way, following their journey and seeing them do well motivates me in a way to chase my dreams too. Of course, there are some musicians such as Oscar & the Wolf and Thom Yorke who sound wise really inspire me. I love how they sculpt atmospheres and capture the “mood”, which I also try to do in my music.

What are some of the obstacles you encounter in your career?
The biggest obstacle for me is doing everything all at once while maintaining consistency. At this moment I am fully independent and do everything myself.

I write/arrange/produce/record and promote my songs all by myself. Don’t get me wrong I do really enjoy the process but sometimes it’s a struggle keeping up with everything while staying creative.

What distinguishes you as a creative individual?
I am a dreamy person who likes to live and enjoy the present moment but sometimes I get super overwhelmed by thoughts and feelings of the past and future. My initial goal is to capture these feelings and moments in my creations in order to understand them better.

I think I often create impulsively and quickly. For a long time I won’t have an idea and then suddenly if I am in the zone I can finish writing a song in an hour’s time.

What’s the significance of the current song or album in your life?
The song means a lot to me and is part of a personal healing process. It touches on feelings of grief, past trauma and moving on from losing lost ones.

These moments and emotions are inevitable for all of us at some point in our life so besides my own healing I hope it also helps other people to feel their emotions, accept them and then give them space while letting go…

What are you working on at the moment?
I have a couple of more singles that I am currently mixing and mastering which will be part of a string of releases. My next single release is set for the end of August. Also, I am editing a music video for the single which might already be out when this interview gets published, so make sure to check that out.

What are your plans for the year ahead?
As planning has been a bit difficult and disappointing due to the pandemic for now I am keeping to releasing music online but eventually, I’d like to make an EP and do a little European tour around March/ April 2023 next year. No set dates other than that but I am working on it!
