The Samurais Talks About New Single Silence Of The Day

The Samurais are a four-piece good-time indie rock band from the South Coast of England, the UK, based in East Dorset. Since their formation in 2018, they have built a following and a solid local reputation, culminating most recently in 2022 when they were asked to headline some local music festivals, such as the H&W Dorset Beer Festival in Blandford and the Lightning Bolt Festival in Lytchett Matravers.

They began by playing covers and originals gigs in various Dorset/Devon pubs and bars. Additionally, they gave performances at the Poole Lighthouse Theatre for “Live and Unheard” and the Teddy Rocks Festival in 2022.

When asked about the song, this is what Neil Sexton had to say

“This song was mostly written whilst out walking on a hot summers day during lockdown trying to clear the head. It’s about staying strong and keeping faith that things will work out, even when things seem hopeless.”

The band is now in the studio creating their first album. Their first single, “Do What You Feel,” will be published in March 2022, and their second single, “Silence of the Day,” will be released on August 15, 2022. They have also been hard at work on their own original songs. Additionally, the new track has already been broadcast on more than 20 radio stations throughout the world, including those in the UK & Europe, USA, Australia, and South Africa!

The Samurais Talks About New Single Silence Of The Day

What is your stage name?
The Samurais

Is there a story behind your stage name?

We went through what seemed like hundreds of names and couldn’t agree on one until we came up with this idea. A few of the band liked Japanese culture, and we liked the idea of this and the samurai sword so that was it! The Samurais!

Where do you find inspiration?

Mainly through my own life experiences, but some songs have been written in tribute to people who have inspired me such as Tom Petty and David Bowie.

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

I’ve always been a massive music fan and I can remember my parents playing The Beatles, The Stones and The Kinks records whilst I was growing up. There was always music on in the house and I knew I wanted to learn to play and write my own songs when I was in my early teens.

Are you from a musical or artistic family?
Not really, nobody else in my family plays an instrument or has been in a band so I’m pretty much on my own with that one!

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

As a 90’s kid, I loved listening to the likes of Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, but I also love the music of people like Tom Petty, Neil Young and David Bowie.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

I bought a cheap acoustic guitar and learned to play my favourite songs in my bedroom as a kid. I just progressed to writing my own stuff as I got better and learned more.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
I saw Oasis in Bournemouth in 1995.

How could you describe your music?

Varied! I don’t think our music fits into one genre, we are quite a flexible band and our songs can be quite different at times, but I suppose most of what we do is indie rock based.

Describe your creative process.

I write most of our songs on an acoustic guitar sat at home but some of the better songs we have written have come while jamming. If we come up with something that sounds good then I will take it away and write the lyrics to it and work on it with the rest of the band.

What is your main inspiration?

A lot of the time it’s my kids, but sometimes I write about the world and issues that matter to me.

What musician do you admire most and why?
David Bowie, I love how he constantly reinvented himself and how his music crossed genres.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

I think we are constantly evolving and developing as a band. We are in the early stages of that so I think we will continue to evolve with the music we write and the sound we create.

Who do you see as your main competitor?

I never really see music as a competition. We just do our thing and if people like it then that’s great.

What are your interests outside of music?
The band was formed from our local running club in Poole so that’s always been something we are interested in.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

We are all part-time musicians and I work in law so that’s what I would be doing.

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

There have been many along the way. It’s a tough thing to do. We are an unsigned band so trying to get our own music out to a wider audience with little or no marketing budget is quite a challenge!

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

Do away with reality tv music shows.

Why did you choose this as the title of this project?

We haven’t yet come up with the title for our album so that’s still to be decided but we are heading back into the studio soon to record the rest of the album and I can tell you then!

What are your plans for the coming months?
We will complete our debut album and have that ready for release in the early part of 2023 and then we hope to get out to play some live shows to promote it.

Do you have any artistic collaboration plans?

None at present.

Thanks for listening to our music, and supporting the band, and keep your eyes out for more from us very soon.
