DJ, producer, remixer, vocalist, and vintage synthesiser extraordinaire, The Domain is a multi-talented force in electronic music.
Incorporating influences as diverse as Synthwave and deep house with current dance rhythms, The Domain is sure to appeal to fans of retro synths, smooth vocals, and upbeat dance music.
Even as a youngster, The Domain enjoyed playing the guitar and even went on to study music at university at the age of 14 but he eventually became homeless and never finished his education.
With no instrument to play, his interest in freestyle rap led him to discover “Australian Hip Hop,” and the grandiose production project “The Domain” was created.
We got to talking about his new album “Favorite Mistake” throughout our conversation. The bouncy movement and enticing melody of this song are sure to raise your spirits.
The new single, “Favorite Mistake,” features New York vocalist Lousy on a peppy synth-driven pop track that will have you moving.
What is your real and showbiz name?
My name’s Michael McKean, The Domain is the name I’m using for this new electronic music project
Where are you from (hometown)?
I grew up in Adelaide, although I don’t really call this my hometown. I pretty much spent my entire life on the road randomly searching for a place to call home since I was a teenager.
I was quite happy in Byron Bay until the Australian Government enforced the worst lockdowns on the planet and everybody fled the cities and all the millionaires from Melbourne and Sydney bought or rented the whole town. Pretty much everyone I know was displaced.
How did you get into music?
I started playing the guitar when I was around 12. I was pretty good. It was actually a little (too) easy because I could look at the sheet music and play pretty much any song in just a matter of minutes.
I ended up just playing Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin songs and all the stuff that’s actually technically challenging. Then I slowly migrated into making beats. We would host epic house parties every weekend and have mad cyphers with all the local rappers, so I would make beats for all the freestyle sessions and the battles.
What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your field feels like?
So I’m a producer – which involves making beats and also working with vocalists to create songs. I also do all my own mixing. I consider mixing as even more skilful than making beats, the mix engineer is always the one who makes the song sound amazing, I think they deserve more credit.
Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
That’s a good question. I seem to be always, permanently motivated and inspired. I’ve not been. I’m just trying to keep up with all the ideas that I have been given to me from a (higher) source. Just trying to catch up with me so I can live my full potential.
What does your current song/album mean to you?
“Favourite Mistake” is THE BEGINNING. It’s what I consider my first (publicly available) song. This is the start of whatever comes afterwards – and I have a lot of other songs I need to release. There is one other song on my Spotify profile, although it wasn’t really perfectly mixed and mastered. I mastered it myself and as I get better at mixing, I always look back and hear the imperfections…
What do you do aside from this profession?
I’ve done pretty much every low-paid dead-end profession you can think of… Construction labour, lots of landscaping, factories, worked on lots of farms, lots of hospitality work, sales, probably tons of stuff I can’t even remember.
At the moment I’m bartending. I used to quite enjoy bartending before COVID but I guess it’s lost some of its appeals now.
What are your hobbies?
Bro, I literally have the time of my life every time I get in the studio! My favourite part is when I get to work with a really talented singer. For me, that is basically heaven on Earth. I’m so lucky to do that regularly.
