Steve Yanek Talks About His Latest Album ‘Long Overdue’

South Central Pennsylvania-based musician Steve Yanek is a singer, songwriter, and composer.

Steve, a former entrepreneur, discovered a delay owing to the successful start-up of a firm and the turbulent nature of the music industry. It didn’t stop him from starting his own businesses, however.

As he worked on his own record label and toured with a band, Primitive Records, he was also working on his own music, creating new songs, setting up a recording facility, and putting together a band that would enable him to perform again.

As a result of taking these actions, his career in the music business has benefited greatly. He’s back with a new album titled “Long Overdue,” which he released today.

In comparison to other albums, “Long Overdue” is a unique album with 10 solid and awesome songs produced by Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, David Crosby and CSN) with a cast of incredible backing musicians including Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp) and Billy Payne (Little Feat) with other tracks that were recorded with Rod Morgenstein (John Mellencamp) and the late T Lavitz (Little Feat) (Jazz Is Dead and The Dixie Dregs).

I can tell that a lot of time, love, heart and soul went into this album from the names above. Music Arena Gh is honoured to be able to premiere the album during a talk with him on this platform.

What is your real and showbiz name?
Steve Yanek is the name my parents gave me at birth.

Where are you from (hometown)?
I grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. A very interesting blue-collar town built on the steel industry of the last century and filled with a lot of colourful characters to this day!

How did you get into music?
Music seemed to be everywhere around me growing up, but listening to my mother’s Everly Brothers record at the age of three is my earliest recollection of music that really stirred something up inside of me. Their song “Bird Dog” did it for me!

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why??
My style is a derivative of the 70s singer-songwriter era, mainly what is often referred to as the Laurel Canyon sound. Growing up it was The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elton John and Cat Stevens, mostly.

But the music that really changed my life happened when I started playing the guitar and writing my own songs and I discovered the catalogues of CSN, Neil Young, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, and Poco.

Pretty much in that order and to a degree that became an obsession as a teenager and has been a steady source of inspiration for me over the years.

Lately, David Crosby and David Crosby have both been very inspiring as they continue to be so creative with great new music still flowing from them.

What does your current song/album mean to you?
This one is very special to me. A lot of the songs are very personal and deal with life, love, mistakes, regrets, redemption and finally, death. It’s the circle of life.

What are your hobbies?
Hiking! My wife and I have lived off of the Appalachian Trail, literally- it borders our property, for over thirty years. And we’ve enjoyed hiking several sections of it over the years. We’re day hikers, though, lol.

But it’s great exercise and a great way to stay balanced. Especially in these crazy times, we’re living in.
