Stargazing As Son Silva Luminates The SkyVeiw

Son Silva is a rapper, producer and singer-songwriter born and raised in the Big Smoke, his art bridges between cultures, continents and styles. There’s a sensitivity to his music – from dejected, prideful raps and tender, melodic croons to punkish, guttural yells into the abyss about drug-fuelled fallouts with old flames, his delivery is diverse and evocative.

Coupled with his meticulously crafted mystical and shapeshifting soundscapes, Son Silva concerns himself less with genre and chases authenticity through pure expressionism.
Son Silva used the last of his student loans to buy a keyboard and learn jazz in his final year of university. Son Silva continues to challenge and innovate as he gears up for his upcoming summer 2022 follow-up to 2020’s debut release ‘A Love Minute’.

Skyview” is an exuberant, loud and distorted track about anxiety and persevering through that anxiety; it is a song that delves into the tendency to shell up in the face of social anxiety that was purposely written to be triumphant and loud, in order to act as a sort of musical and lyrical contrast.

He said

Sonically, I wanted the production to marry influences from shoegaze and pop punk with its loud, distorted guitar-laden soundscape but with the tempo, raps, and rhythms of drill, grime, and garage with the syncopated drums during the verses, skittering hihats and heavy drums during the hooks.

He continued by saying:

I wanted to reframe the somewhat archaic sounds of old and modernise them with skippy drums and ferocious vocal rhythms and textures.
I also wanted to find a home for some drill raps I wrote as a joke a year ago.

What is your stage name

Son Silva

Is there a story behind your stage name?
It’s a reference to an anime I like, while also simply being my name. I wish there was a greater story but that’s being saved for after my career starts popping.

Where do you find inspiration?
It’s all around me, man. I draw inspiration from the movies I watch, the people in my life, the music I consume, even simple observations I make in my everyday life, walking to work, reading a sticker in a bathroom stall. I keep my mind and heart open and make sense of what I internalise in a more formal process like writing or recording notes on my phone. I just think inspiration is a lifestyle.

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

It wasn’t. I loved my video games and movies and I liked the pretty sounds that came along with the visuals, music only started being significant in my life around 2014 and I only started being musical in 2017.

Are you from a musical or artistic family?

Not at all. My family, being immigrants, were very focused on making an honest living separate from the noise and allure. I got an uncle who paints and collects records but apart from that, I’m one of one. My family, for multiple reasons ranging from personal to systematic, were never given the freedom to explore creativity in that regard, but they ultimately worked so my siblings and I, could.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

Not a soul; I knew how tapped the industry was, and I still don’t care for the industry, in its current state, at the very least. I just wanna make music and have my little slice of home with like-minded people.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

YouTube and stubbornness.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
It was Childish Gambino in 2014. Around the BTI era, which was fun at the ripe age of 17/18. I fucked up and booked upper tickets so we weren’t standing in the stalls like we wanted to. My boy’s still salty about it, too.

Describe your creative process.

There’s no formal process to it but ideas can begin in a lot of different ways. A voice note, a conversation, a passage from a song I like, a word of phrase taken out of context. For the upcoming projects, there are central themes and motifs that I’m incorporating specific sounds and auditory colours with, but apart from that, creativity is a lifestyle rather than any given process.

What is your main inspiration?

Recently? Spite.

What musician do you admire most and why?
Milton Nascimento, easily. He’s a genius who’s worked with legends across genres but he made music with intentionality, defiance and with unparalleled passion. Look up the backstory behind his album ‘Milagre dos Peixes’ and you’ll get why.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

Not particularly, since I never had a concrete or easily defined style or genre apart from being a fantastic rapper and writer. My first project was moody, but that hasn’t left me, it’s just not dark and cold enough yet for the dark shit. To be honest, the only way my style has evolved is that I got better.

What are your interests outside of music?

Cinema, video games, manga, anime, painting,. I dislike most board and card games.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

Probably waking up like everyone else and making money for someone else while getting a small cut for my box flat in the city.

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

How annoying everyone that doesn’t make music can be. And how annoying everyone that does make music can be.

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

Pay the artists properly. Or eradicate ego from the equation.

What are your plans for the coming months?

Release more music, do live shows and look pretty while doing it.

What message would you like to give to your fans?

1. It’s not enough for you to succeed. Your enemies must fail.
2. There’s always someone crazier than you. But strive to convince others that that probability is lower than it actually is.
3. Don’t put plastic in the microwave.
4. When buying food for unhoused people, remind them that they can choose whatever they like (within your budget). Simply having the power to choose what to eat or drink, is more important than you could ever imagine.
