What is your stage name
– Shihori

Is there a story behind your stage name?

-It’s just my real name. It means wabi-sabi, Japanese sense of beauty in imperfection.
I think it’s cool that my name represents traditional Japanese beauty.

Where do you find inspiration?

– Where I see / hear the moving stories. And When I experience something that impacts me.

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

– Savior.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?
⁃ I started to wish to be a singer when I was 7, but the enthusiastic audience of the karaoke stage at the school festival when I was 17 got me to decide to become a progressional singer.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

⁃ I was all self-taught except for studying classical piano when I was a child. But my basic knowledge of musical methods came from Beethoven.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
⁃ I don’t remember who he was but my family took me to a classical piano concert when I was 10 or so. He played a few of Beethoven’s piano sonata.

How would you describe your music?

⁃ Rainbow pop, since I write various types of songs. I also love combining multiple genres.

Describe your creative process.

⁃ 1. Ask God what I want.
⁃ 2. Forget about it
⁃ 3. Go enjoy taking shower or a nice latte at cafes.
⁃ 4. A song would come to my mind.
⁃ 5. Finish songwriting.
⁃ 6. Make a piano demo, and record my vocals.
⁃ 7. Send the demo to a music producer.

What is your main inspiration?

⁃ My experiences that are amazing or terrible.
⁃ When I see someone is discouraged and I wanna inspire him or her, I tend to get strong messages.

What musician do you admire most and why?

⁃ Beethoven. Because he saved my life when I was bullied at school and had no one to help me. I felt like he knew how I was sad, lonely, and discouraged. Listening to his piano sonata pieces and playing these songs really saved my life.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?
⁃ It did really a lot!
⁃ I started out as a duo with a talented pianist, we were super invincible as a “classical crossover duo”. Our music was super free that crossover pop, classical, jazz, soul…
⁃ We turned out to be separated because she debuted as a classical pianist, and I started singing/playing the piano style which I’ve been doing for many years. I inherited the previous style but tried on a more simple and easy pop style.
⁃ I happened to make a major debut as an anime singer-songwriter in 2007, I also started more anime/game style of music, and this pop/complex style became kind of trendy in J-pop at the time.
⁃ I moved to the US in 2018, I’ve been exploring American pop these years, which is combing more EDM or R&B flavors with my original style.
⁃ I am planning to try many more!

Who do you see as your main competitor?
⁃ I’ve never thought about that.

What are your interests outside of music?

⁃ Acting!! Becoming an actress was also my long dream and I’ve been taking acting classes!
⁃ Learning about spiritual growth and love. Movies, drama shows, and anything having great stories.
⁃ I’ve been longing to be in big nature.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

⁃ Acting definitely.

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

⁃ I wasn’t fortunate that I didn’t have good encounters and couldn’t take chances.
⁃ For example… when I first got sung, a very popular TV commercial when I was 22, it became very popular but my boss at that time didn’t care about that, I missed my first big chance.
⁃ That boss abused me mentally and verbally for 2 years, he (or other musicians who belonged to the company) kidnapped me at the end.
⁃ I broke my mental and physical health and was traumatized for many years.
⁃ After I debuted, I made one hit, and my single ranked #5 on the Japanese hit chart, but my director was absent because of mental disease at that time, and I had nobody to take care of me…
-But I’ve learned so much and I believe that all those misfortunes were for me to succeed in the US!

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

⁃ I’ve seen that US artists in the same genres are not supporting each other. It’s not the artists’ fault but seems the entire industry (including the venues) aren’t interested in that much.
⁃ Forming communities helps the artists. So I wish many more people would ne aware of it.

Why did you choose this as the title of this project?

⁃ I wanted to make something relaxing and loving vibe of the song since I’d released powerful/aggressive songs lately.

What are your plans for the coming months?

⁃ I’ll go on the Japan Tour for the first time in 3 years finally!
⁃ And I’m excited to write new songs for the next year.

Do you have any artistic collaboration plan

⁃ A new collab song with Nico Bellisario will be released in the winter!
⁃ Since our previous song “Holy Steel” has been heard a lot (over 3M views on YouTube), we are super thrilled to release this new one!
“Holly Steel”

What message would you like to give to your fans?

⁃ Thank you so much for reading my interview!!
⁃ I’ll bring more happiness, inspiration, and rainbows to you, stay tuned!!
