R.I.P You Dead 2 Me Says Ailsha

Irish superstar AILSHA (pronounced El-sha) describes herself as a ‘pink-haired pop-goth with a name that’s a pain to pronounce.

AILSHA writes about things in life that we should all laugh about rather than cry. AILSHA spent her childhood learning to compose and writing comedy. At the age of eleven she taught herself to produce and eventually merged music with comedy in her teenage years.

‘R.I.P. (Dead 2 Me)’ is a revamped and re-branded version of her 2020 song ‘Ghosted’, which was released at Halloween. The track ended up being shortlisted for ‘Track of the Year’ in the Hot Press Hottie Awards 2021 and enchanted the media, warranting her to re-create the track to its best potential. Now ‘R.I.P. (Dead 2 Me)’ is the version of the song that represents the artist she’s become in the last two years; sassy, spooky with a sprinkle of punk.

The song illustrates the negative impacts of the modern dating practice known as “ghosting,” which involves a romantic interest suddenly ceasing all contact without giving any explanation. The frantic pop song laments being ghosted while making humorous allusions to the funerals and eulogies for the “ghoster.”

“With vocals and sounds that have been recorded during the last two years, ‘R.I.P. (Dead 2 Me)’ delivers a punkier sound which is more in line with who I am now and I’m excited to share it with the world.”

She said;

In an interview with Mister Styx of Musicarenagh, Ailsha shared a lot about her come up and made a lot of revelations about her personal life. Get the full story below

What is your stage name:
AILSHA

Is there a story behind your stage name?

My stage name is just my first name! People mispronouncing my name (El-sha) is the story of my life, which I like to make jokes about on stage.

Where do you find inspiration?

I usually find inspiration in things I hear; I’d be chatting to someone and there could be music playing in the background and I get totally distracted and imagine alternative chords for it. Usually when I’m quiet in a social scene it’s because I’m composing something in my head!

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?
I’ve been lucky to grow up surrounded by music my whole life. My family are all musicians too. My dad is a composer and I grew up so inspired by his work that by the age of eleven I’d taught myself how to compose and produce using his software and music equipment. My parents were always brilliant at encouraging me to pursue a life in music.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

Although my family would have been my biggest inspiration growing up, it was the artists I listened to in my teenage years who inspired me to be a part of the music industry. In my teenage years I really looked up to Lily Allen for her wry lyrics, Lana Del Rey for her unique music production and Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation for being a badass front woman of a rock band.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

One of my first memories is singing in the car. I used to always sing but I only gained confidence in my singing within the last two years. My parents put me in all sorts of music lessons- at one point I was learning the harp, clarinet and drums at the same time. In the end I chose my instruments and ended up being self-taught on the piano, glockenspiel, guitar and tin whistle.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
Bombay Bicycle Club in Vicar Street in 2011. I nearly lost the plot when we got to meet them afterwards because they were doing a signing. I remember saying to them that it was my first gig and that it was the best experience of my life.

How could you describe your music?

Indie goth pop with a sprinkle of punk.

Describe your creative process.

I write my songs through producing demos, with music and arrangements coming first and the lyrics coming last. I’ll only sit down in my studio to write once I can hear the entire arrangement and melody of the song in my head, then I’ll think of a topic to write about and write lyrics to fit. It’s very seldom that I will write lyrics first but when that happens it’s usually because I’ve heard someone say something and it clicked into a rhythm in my head.

What musician do you admire most and why?
Although I am biased due to a family connection, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy is someone I really look up to. I love his witty lyrics and instrumental arrangements. All of his songs are a masterpiece!

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?
It certainly did! It took me a while to find my sound as an artist- I’d grown up longing to be a rock artist but had the skills to produce pop. My new single, ‘R.I.P. (Dead 2 Me)’, is a taste of the style I’m currently going for and a glimpse into what is yet to come.

What are your interests outside of music?

I love learning about space and being involved in activism against animal cruelty.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

I’d probably still be working as a make-up artist as I worked in that field for years.

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

Finding my sound!

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

Bring back the days when artists could be artists and not have to be content creators as well.

What are your plans for the coming months?

I am currently on a Halloween Tour of Ireland- something I’ve always wanted to do! After that I’ll be knuckling down the bones of my next releases.
