Lupe Dragon is a Northern New Jersey-based alternative singer-songwriter and composer. The state of New Jersey has seen her perform around the state.

Like Ed Sheeran and Billie Eilish with a swagger and vocals like Hayley Williams (Paramore), she is an all-female rock powerhouse.

You can learn a lot more about this amazing performer by checking out the website. I Know What You Did” is her most recent single, which she discussed with us.

What is your real name and your official Showbiz name?
My full name is Guadalupe Dragon but I go by Lupe Dragon. A lot of people don’t think it’s my real name but I am! Dragon is a Hungarian last name, my paternal grandfather is from there.

Seriously, I thought the same. How did you get into music?
Growing up I was always involved with music by either singing in the school choir or playing the trumpet in middle school. In the 8th grade, I swapped band class with choir and never looked back. And then I eventually taught myself how to play the guitar and the rest is history…

What field or genre are you into and how would you describe it?
I hate putting myself into a box but the best way I could describe my music is alternative pop. It combines a little bit of everything from pop to rock and even some hip-hop elements.

What was your first project and the people you worked with and what year?
The first project I ever put out was an ep titled “Can’t Even Stand It”. I started recording it in 2018 and I released it in 2019.

I worked with Matthew Filipek on the record as well as some in house studio instrumentalists. Kurt Wubbenhorst helped a lot with some of the lead guitars and live drums and Matt produced 2 tracks on the record. Overall it was a great experience for a first record.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
I think what motivates me a lot are my friends. I’ve had so many doubts, especially in the past few years about how I can continue a career in music. I even forgot what I loved about making music.

My friends, my day ones, they’re the reason I keep creating. And honestly.. my heartbreak is another reason why I keep creating because my outlet has always been music and performing. Without it, I would probably not be here.

Any artists/bands you look up to? With reason(s) why?
There are so many artists and bands out there I look up to. Andrew McMahon, Ed Sheeran, Dashboard Confessional, Halsey, Nada Surf.

I grew up with these artists, started listening to them in middle school and high school and continued to listen to them in college. They all saved me and made music that was ever-changing and growing and had lyrics that continued to stick with me.

What do you look out for in this line of business?
Opportunities. I am constantly looking for opportunities to grow and learn and hopefully be a part of something bigger.

What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
That’s a tough one. I think lack of motivation has been a big one, especially because the pandemic really made me not want to create.

Another thing would definitely have to listen to the opinions of people who don’t matter and find out who my REAL friends are. That was tough because when you’re in this field, it gets lonely cause a lot of people don’t see all the work that truly goes into it and the late nights of crying and marketing and hoping that it reaches people.

I learned that some people aren’t people I want in my circle if they don’t support me the same way I support them.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
It’s one of the best things and one of the worst things to ever happen. Industry professionals expect us to call all the shots and do all the artist development on our own and if it proves to work, THEN they might cut you a deal.

The problem with that though is the market is oversaturated with thousands of people all trying to do the same thing. It’s brutal out here.

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
If you believe in something, don’t give up. If you need money, get a job you might not enjoy, and make that money and hit the studio. If you can learn how to do stuff out of the comfort of your own home, even better.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this. I suck at engineering and I love working with others. Some people love working completely on their own. Again, there is no right way or wrong way, there’s only a YOUR way. So go and do it.

What is your current project about?
My new single I Know What You Did is a song about heartbreak and betrayal. There’s a different side to me here. I’m showing my raw anger and distress.

I haven’t really done that in my other songs yet but I wanted to show it in this record in particular. This is the ugly and gross side of heartbreak that we never like to see in ourselves. I feel like I’m the green Hulk waiting to be talked down from my angry state.

What are your hobbies?
Besides music, I love writing poetry, plays and musicals just for the fun of it. I also love gaming, my favourite video games are Kingdom Hearts, Overwatch, Fortnite and Stardew Valley at the moment. The Lego games are cool too!

What do you do aside from this profession?
Audio and Visual Editing is super fun. I also do some traditional PR on the side for creatives. I’m also trying to stream on twitch again!

What is one message you would give to your fans?
One piece of advice I wished I listened to more often: Don’t listen to anyone, just do what makes you happy and forget the rest.
