Koala Bar Warns of Impending Danger

Koala Bar, a duo that formed in 2015, became well-known after their 2018 debut album “Di Sorte” which earned them a nomination in the Best New Artist category of the music magazine Gaffa. “Ethos Pathos Locos,” their second full-length album, was released in 2020. The band recently expanded to a quartet with the addition of two new members.

Inspired by real life events, the song deals with the complex negative emotions that can arise when going through toxic relationships. Speaking on the track’s lyrics, one of the band members reflects, “The main topic of this song is a reminiscence of a destructive relationship

A real-life relationship that “felt absolutely toxic back in the day (…) But at the same time (it) was filled with unconditional love” is how the events are described, and this ambiguity is represented in the song’s music and lyrics.

The song was recorded in the Stigbergstudion in Gothenburg in the fall of 2021, the band enlisted the help of producer Petter Lithvall to assist them with the project.

Koala Bar signed with Gothenburg-based Rexius Records in June 2022.

The band made some disclosure in an interview with Mister Styx of Musicarenagh, get the full story below

Koala Bar Warns of Impending Danger

What is your stage name

Koala Bar

Is there a story behind your stage name?

First of all It’s kind of a game with words (koala bear) obviously.. We also wanted to create some sort of virtual/fictional bar where people would just wanna hang out.

Where do you find inspiration?
From all different kinds of places, not least from other artists of course. We tend to drift towards suggestive indie rock and bands like the National, Volcano Choir and Phoebe Bridgers.
At the same time we really try to do our own thing, mixing genres, style of lyrics and so on.

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?
I (Axel) come from a family where music played a big part. My sister has always lived and breathed music so she’s always been a huge musical inspiration to me growing up.

Are you from a musical or artistic family?

As mentioned there are some elements, mom and dad are both singing and my sister is a fantastic pianist and a singer-songwriter.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

From the beginning it was just like every little kid who’s into music, I wanted to be famous and prominent but later on it has grown into more of an ideal picture to be able to express yourself through music and perhaps some day make a living out of what you love.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

Two of us in the band actually met at a singer-songwriter education, where we happened to share a bathroom – and more stuff as we got to know each other. So partly from there and then basically just learning by doing. We all share the ambition to get better for each release along the way.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?
I think it was backstreet boys in Gothenburg 1996.. I fell asleep during ”As Long as You Love Me” I think it was.

How could you describe your music?
As a smooth yet sometimes dark ride into the deepest of forests, accompanied by both rain and blistering heat from the sun. Or ”indie rock”.

Describe your creative process.
It’s a little bit different from time to time but it often starts with some sort of chord progression followed by a vocal melody. Then we try to puzzle everything together. We usually spend a lot of time on the arrangement and with the production of a song. We can spend months just trying out different phrasings of a certain word and stuff like that..

What is your main inspiration?

Justin Vernon

What musician do you admire most and why?

Justin Vernon, again. Like everyone else. Everything he touches turns to gold. Sufjan Stevens is also up there.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

Yes, a lot. Trying both our native language (Swedish) and English in early stages did us well, and lately we prefer writing in English. Sound wise we’ve gone from more ambient/electronic towards more of a ”bandy” kind of sound. A lot of our new songs leaning towards drums and bass. Which came naturally after Olli and Pete joined the band two years ago.

Who do you see as your main competitor?

All the shallowness in the business. And money.

What are your interests outside of music?

For me, sports, sports, and sports. And film.

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

Probably what I’m doing now, working off stage instead of on stage.

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

How many words do we have here? There is so much but maybe when two of us where sharing an apartment and got evicted due to extensive partying. We were very worn out and that period was tough for us. Another one was when we had a very infected relationship with our prior Record label.

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

The same thing we wanna change in all contexts, stop being a fucking moron.

Why did you choose this as the title of this project?

Ingest ≈ Digest. No need for explanation.

What are your plans for the coming months?

We are releasing the second single of the album on the 28th of October and playing a live show in our hometown the same night.

Live gig in Copenhagen in late November followed by our album release the 2nd December. Two weeks later we’re throwing a badass release party at Babel in Malmö.

Do you have any artistic collaboration plans

Not at the moment but a few loose plans.

What message would you like to give to your fans?

Join in to koala bar and don’t be afraid of your taught, they can’t hurt you per se.
