What is your real name?

My name is Trevour Amunga, I was born in Kenya and we spell my name with a “u” in it there, but in America it is Trevor Amunga.

Follow him on Instagram.

What’s your official Stage Name (showbiz name)?

My stage name is my actual name, Trevour Amunga.

What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?

I do music and fashion. I primarily focus on music, and will occasionally model on the side.

How did you get into what you do (music, modelling, art, dance, etc.?)

I don’t exactly remember when or how I got into music, because I think it was just always a part of me since a young age. I visited home (Kenya) recently in 2020, and the people I grew up with had stories on how I used to have rap performances in Church when I was younger, none of which I remember of course. I did however record my first song in 2015, and I believe that was the first time I decided to fully pursue it. As for modelling, it has always been my sister’s passion, and so she got me into it because I’d always go with her to her shoots.

What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your career/profession/ field feels like?

I’m a rapper so hip hop is my field. Hip hop has always been my favourite genre because of how seamlessly it can be fused with other genres. I believe it’s in the best place possible right now because there’s so many different styles of it now; from boom bap, to trap, to experimental, pop etc. Rappers are not boxing themselves in. I love hip hop in 2022 because listening to new ways in which people are trying to push the genre only motivates me more to not settle since there’s always something new to try.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?

My parents definitely! I lost my dad in 2020, but he and my mom are the biggest inspirations for me because they grew up in small villages in Kenya, but somehow managed to work hard towards their goals and get their children to America, while strongly impacting their community back home as well. It always lets me know that anything is possible as long as I work hard towards it. The other thing that inspires me is just life in general. I love poetry, just as much as music and there’s so much poetry in everyday life. I love seeing people interacting, getting food, walking, the little trivial things people do everyday usually inspire me. Music and art in general also heavily inspires me. I also love art in general, whether that’s music or paintings, or movies, good or bad, expression is my favourite and the most poetical thing about humans.

What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?

The first project I ever worked on was this ep called ‘It’s like seasons,’ this was around fall of 2016. I worked on it myself, but I got the instrumentals from producers on soundcloud. It was a lo-fi sounding project about how life is like seasons.

How many projects do you have so far?

I have 2 projects out so far. My first official EP ‘For Akira,’ which came out October 1st, 2021, and the 2nd one Vespa which came out March 18th, 2022.

How long have you been doing what you do?

Since 2015 is when I first officially started to record, I’ll start counting there so 7 years.

What do you look out for in this line of business?

People whose primary motive is money. Of course the importance of money can never be understated, and music is a business, but to grow into the artist I want to become I would need to be surrounded by those who just love music first of all, and money is second, which is obviously a really big challenge.

Have you won any awards or been nominated for an award? Or in short, any achievement? Both in and out of your career path.

No, I have not.

What is this new release about?

My first release was about youth, this one is about my dad. He passed away in November 2022 due to cancer. I titled it Vespa, derived from Vesper which means evening prayer, because it was me holding on to my last bit of faith that God will heal him, which never happened, then that prayer turned to a hope that I’ll find peace, which I can’t fathom. The Ep is about my struggle with faith, and grief, and my desperation to find a peace of mind amidst all that. The title was also inspired by Bjork’s Vespertine album, which is what I mainly listened to during the time of my dad’s passing, and it inspired my way of expression on Vespa.

Who and how many people worked on it?

The people involved in its creation are myself, Darious Porter, who was the mixing/mastering engineer, Luna Bands and Josh Berkeley as the featured vocalists, Mbwav, SXINT, and Ty as the producers, and Diacinco who designed the cover art.

What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?

Something unique and different but still very honest. I think if you’ve listened to my 2 ep’s, you’ll notice that both sound completely different from each other, so you can expect me to never settle.
