What is your real name?
My real name is Marcel Marek
What’s your official Stage Name (showbiz name)?
I’m known as Mersi
What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?
I’m a musician and producer. I am also a digital graphic artist.
How did you get into what you do (music, modelling, art, dance, etc.?)
I’ve been doing music since my childhood. My grandfather was a professional musician and showed me the way to go as a musician.
What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your career/profession/ field feels like?
I studied music at the Pilsen Conservatory. During my career I’ve been playing with many bands in small clubs as well as in big halls and festivals. Also as a DJ I played many parties in many clubs. Last year I’m busy with my new electronic dance music (EDM) project called Mersi. The idea behind the project is to release a new song every six weeks. I hope to have enough musical ideas to make it last as long as possible.
Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
Apart from my grandfather, my parents and later friends recommended music to me. Then I tried to go my own way. I like jazz, funk, but also classical music and world music. I like to be inspired, but not influenced.
What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
My first band was called Burma Jones and it was in the first half of the nineties. We were playing music inspired by the “New Romantic” genre but with a more funky influence. And we were also quite popular.
How many projects do you have so far?
There have been many so far. This project, called Mersi, is the seventh.
How long have you been doing what you do?
As I said, I have been involved in music since my school days. So almost all my life.
What do you look out for in this line of business?
I really achieved what I was looking for in the music industry. I’m performing, making music and being able to pay the bills. And music makes me happy and that’s the most important thing to me.
Have you won any awards or been nominated for an award? Or in short, any achievement? Both in and out of your career path.
Actually, yes. In the 90s I won the Czech Grammy for best band with Burma Jones.
What is this new release about?
The goal was to create a positive song that would be my reaction to the difficult time we are all going through right now because of the covid experience and more recently the war in Ukraine. I believe that positivity helps us live a better life, and I will be more than happy if this song makes you feel better.
Who and how many people worked on it?
It was me and a very talented sound engineer Roman Rai. So just two people.
What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?
I will be working on new music, touring and creating new digital graphics. I have only recently discovered this kind of art and it opens up a new universe for my creativity.
