Originally from Usk, a Town in Wales, Jon Penny is a British artist, songwriter, and composer who works in the indie-pop genre.
Jon Penny is now pursuing a career as a solo musician after deciding to leave the life of a band. He has been working hard to improve his skills as a performer, songwriter, and producer, and as a consequence, he has released an incredible new single that is titled “Still Smilin'”
The cover image of the song first piqued my interest in the project that I was going to listen to. This inspired me to become more acquainted with Jon Penny, and I had a conversation with him about his musical career and his intentions for the future.
What is your real and showbiz name?
What would you say is your greatest strength as an artist?
Letting each song lead the way. I prefer not to think in genres
What is your creative process when making music?
I normally start with a single chord from piano or guitar, or I’ll flick through sounds on a synth or drum sample packs. The smallest thing can lead somewhere
How long have you been making music and what attracted you to it?
I’ve been making music for about 20 years. I started with keyboards at a young age but got fed up learning nursery rhymes. My cousin gave me a guitar and it snowballed from there.
What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a band/artist so far?
Pushing to find myself and let go of imitating other successful artists
What streaming sites do you think offer the most value to a band?
I’m not sure which offers the most value but I like use Spotify most of the time. I love getting lost in the suggested artists’ void.
How do you think social media or the internet has affected the music scene in your country?
I think it’s changed things but if you’re ok to adapt to the changes it can work just as well for you
What does your current song mean to you?
The song was inspired by the artwork which is a photo of me as a kid. I’ve never really been as open as in this song before. I’m really just testing myself to see how I feel after knowing people have heard it.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Listen to what you like, dress how you like and be kind to people
