How The Stars Fixed The Tema Motorway

Taking a look at Ghana as a country, one thing that causes loss of lives as motor accidents. This has been an issue of concern as many lives have been lost due to the bad state of our roads.

A number of celebrities have passed on as a result of the nature of our roads. If not for God on the side of some others, it would have been the same story.

The Accra-Tema motorway which was first opened to traffic in November 1965 to link the two cities was constructed under the government of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

The 19-kilometer stretch highway as it is used by many road users on daily basis, has been deprived of street lights and this has led to criminal activities especially during the night. It is a danger zone.

For more than 30 years, the highway did not undergo any major renovation which caused many potholes thus making people get involved in gory accidents.

In 2002 under Ex-president Kufuor administration, he tried to provide streets lights. The project was supposed to celebrate Ghana’s Golden Jubilee but unfortunately, it was suspended because the cables were stolen.

Fast forward to 2009, the late Mills’ Government undertook an exercise on the street at a cost of GHC500,000. The 8-week exercise involved replacement of concrete slabs which had potholes and the repair of the asphalt surface.

As part of this it is obvious and very evident that more work needs to be done to make the road a better one for our dear road users.
