Get To Know Ty Thom And His Newly Released ‘First Day’

Ty Thom, a hip-hop musician and producer from PG County, MD, mixes contemplative lyrics and calm ambient production to encourage people to overcome hurdles and enjoy their accomplishments.

This artist’s viewpoint on the human condition is shaped by his use of various musical styles, including real rap and groovy melodies. Sound expression is used to build a connection with his listeners based on sincerity, openness and relatability.

I had an in-depth conversation with him about his musical experience.

What is your real name?
Tyrell Thomas

What’s your official Showbiz name?
Ty Thom

How did you get into music?
I’ve been around music my whole life. My grandfather was a professional drummer and my dad is a DJ. I grew up around music playing in the house all day every day so it’s just something that I was naturally surrounded by.

What field or genre are you into and how would you describe it?
I’m into all types of music. Obviously, with my own artistry, I’m within the hip-hop and R&B culture but I listen to pretty much any and everything. I’d say I have a pretty eclectic palette for music.

What were your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
The first project I ever dropped was in 2016 during my sophomore of college. I bought some equipment for my birthday and recorded a whole mixtape in a month. I worked on the project with all the homies that I hooped with.

It was probably the most fun I had early on because it was such a new feeling to experience the energy in the room while we were creating. We would make songs every day after practice. It was amazing, to say the least.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
I think being able to make an impact on people is what motivates me the most. I want to give people the same feeling I had when I listened to my favourite artist for the first time.

I grew up taking pride in discovering new music that helped me get through certain points of my life. I work to be that discovery for someone every time they hear something of mine.

Any models you look up to? With reason(s) why?
I look up to a lot of artists. My biggest influences are Drake, ASAP Rocky, Jay-Z, Tyler the Creator and Isaiah Rashad. All of these guys came into the music industry as underdogs and were a part of some huge shift within the genre.

What do you look out for in this line of business?
People with bad intentions. There are many people who want to use you in this line of work. I try to keep myself surrounded by genuine people that I know won’t cross me.

What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
I think my biggest hurdle right now is just the exposure. I know I’m talented but I need to figure out ways to get my music a little more seen without losing my integrity. Some people will do anything just to get on and my morals don’t really align with that. I believe things will take off for me once I get more visibility.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
I think the internet has impacted the music business in good and bad ways. I think it’s made it easier to find and create but there’s also so much coming out too that it can feel cluttered at times.

For fans, a lot of it is being able to sift through everything to find what you really enjoy. As an up and coming artist, it’s a battle because you don’t want to get lost in the sauce from trying to keep up but you also want to take your time and craft your best work so you’re not just putting out anything.

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
Trust your pen. Don’t compare your art to anyone else. Just be you and do what feels right. Don’t think too hard.

What is your current project about?
My upcoming album is about this season of transition that I am in. It’s mostly about things changing in my life and how I’m dealing with everything that’s going on around me.

What are your hobbies?
Watching movies and shows, fashion, hanging out with my friends and family, and hooping

What do you do aside from this profession?
I’m a regular guy outside of music. I got a day job to pay the bills but hopefully, I can start doing music full-time.

What is one message you would give to your fans?
Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. You are capable of anything if you put your mind to it and work. Results will come. Trust God’s timing.
