What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?
K: Musician, lyricist, artist, director, hotsauce sommelier
B: Musician, Screen printing, Fashion, Painter, Lyricist!
How did you get into what you do (music, modelling, art, dance, etc.?)
K: I’ve been making music for 20 years now! The first song I ever produced was for a girl who asked me to a dance. It’s been all downhill from there.
B: I’ve been making music ever since I can remember! I started my first band when I was 9 years old! Lol! I’m not sure exactly how I got into it, I’ve just always felt a connection to music of all kinds.
What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your career/profession/ field feels like?
K: I exist in all fields at once, particularly the EXPERIMENTAL, AVANT GARDE, and FUTURISTIC. My only goal is to create things that have never been done before and to move art and music forward.
B: Every band I’m in is like the Black sheep of music and it was totally an accident, I listen to 90s country irl.
Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
K: I am motivated by new experiences and the unknown. I have no desire to navel gaze, no love for nostalgia, and no reverence for established genres.
B: I love watching music documentaries and music videos to get inspired. I also work at a music venue and being around live music always keeps me motivated. My true love that keeps me going is being on tour. I absolutely love being on the road.
What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
K: My first, and longtime project, was The Kalen Lander Band. TKLB for short. It was just me! I was in the band. We were active for about 12 years in the Arizona underground music scenes.
B: My first “real” project was in 2012, it was a blues rock band called Sister Lip. That band taught me how to be in the studio and how to tour. From day one of touring, I was hooked!!
How many projects do you have so far?
K: So far, I have about… 12 projects and counting. TKLB, Blunt Objects, Shark Fart, B4 Eyes, Why Wolves, The Rolling Blackouts, N-gativ-Nancy, and a few more.
B: Let’s see… The Outlet, Pinnacle of Truth, Sister Lip, Snailmate, tittygraveyard and Moodie Black. There’s a few more out there too, I’m sure.
How long have you been doing what you do?
K: I’ve been officially making music for 20 years. I’ve been writing songs and drawing pictures for over 30 years, though.
B: I’ve been creating since I was a tiny baby, I remember being 3 years old making art at my mom’s embroidery shop. I’ve been making music since I was 12, I believe!
What do you look out for in this line of business?
K: I am always looking for music that sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard. I am always looking out for people who are trying to take advantage of eager young artists.
B: I look for nice people.
Have you won any awards or been nominated for an award? Or in short, any achievement? Both in and out of your career path.
K: In 7th grade I won my school science fair. Last year my band won “Best Local Hotsauce” from Phoenix Magazine. My cat and dog think I’m pretty great, too.
B: I can’t remember what I ate yesterday, the only award I can remember right now is Snailmate won “Best Local Hotsauce” (google Snailmate Stress Sauce) and that’s cause I have a wooden plaque to remind me 🙂
What is this new release about?
K: This new jam is about nostalgia! It is a crutch that destroys progress. The good ol’ days were never that good. Stop romanticising the past and move on! That’s what “It’s Coming Back!” is about.
B: What Kalen said
Who and how many people worked on it?
K: I wrote all the lyrics. Bentley Monet and myself wrote all the music. Ari Leopold recorded and mixed it. Yellowbox Films shot and edited the music video.
What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?
K: Audiences should anticipate more fun, fast, and poignant songs from Snailmate! We have some really great songs and music videos coming soon. They are hilarious and weird and you don’t want to miss them! All of which are part of “Stress Sandwich” our upcoming full-length album!
B: Lots of new releases from all my projects. Tour tour tour tour tour dates! Check out Snailmate.com to see if we are coming to a city near you!! Love y’all!
