Kris Sarafin or just Sarafin is a Canada, Calgary based musician who is well versed in the arts of hip hop and rap. Sarafin has recently released an original single titled “Static”. Which talks about Sarafin pursuing his dreams and accomplishing them as he wishes to inform his listeners it was morals that got him there. We had a few questions and answers with him where he talks about his creative process, inspirations and about the release. Below are exclusive details on Sarafin and his new release.
What’s your official stage name and why did you choose it?
My name is Kris Sarafin. I changed my name in 2018 from Abstrakt. As I felt more aligned with using music as a tool of reflection and at the time I was struggling to understand my brand.
When did you decide to pursue music as a career?
When I was 12-13 years old I enjoyed rapping to a lot of songs and knew a lot of lyrics. That’s when I first started rapping. It wasn’t until I was 17 and one of the first people who supported me got murdered and I vowed to take it more seriously as he said “you got something bro your going to do something big “
How would you describe the music you typically create?
When I’m being creative, I try to be as honest with myself as possible. Meaning I reflect on who I hear on it or what the mood is portraying and I just start freestyling until something hits. Reflective, hopeful, celebratory music.

Big Sean, Mos def, chance the rapper, Kanye west j.Cole, Drake
What’s your creative process like?
As previously mentioned, I always catch a vibe with whoever I’m creating with and try to be as honest with my surroundings as possible. Musically and personally if we are collaborating. Music creation should be fun.
What feelings, subjects, or concepts inspire you as an artist?
Situations of adversity, injustice, growth, accomplishments, happiness, pain, and resilience.
What is the best advice you’ve been given in relation to music?
Focus on what works for you and who you are. Live and learn and most importantly believe in yourself.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
I’m currently a recording engineer here. Calgary I run a studio and mentor a few artists. Producing and helping set up records for marketing.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
I’ve gotten to tour Canada with Raekwon and opened up for some legendary hip-hop acts like De la soul and naughty by nature. But the highlight I would say is having a family of friends that believe, support, and push me to keep doing more!

Chance the rapper or Dave.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
The industry is what it is but I would like to see a mass migration in streaming platforms to a more supportive artist-based streaming service. Currently, artists receive $3.80cdn per 1,000 streams on average.
What is this new release about?
This song was reminiscent of my returning home to Calgary after living in Toronto for 5 years. Coincidentally, Junia T, I met in Toronto through elmnt. Junia was visiting Calgary to guest speak at an electronic music conference so during his time here we got together and started cooking.
Hi-nd and 10 at 10 hosted the studio session which we filmed and had an instant hit. I speak about my time and how it’s weighed on me to pursue this dream of being an artist. And as I’m living out my dream I want to remind myself and my listeners of the morals that got me here.

What are you working on next? Any future plans or projects in the pipeline that we should look out for?
For now, I’m going to be working on a few singles and might drop something within the next year regarding a project.
