Alex Riggen and Nick Pompou make up the two-piece band Murnau. Marnau is based in Moline, Illinois, and they are masters of the rock music genre, or at least of making music that is loud and raw. Murnau has recently released an original tune called “Primroses,” which comes with stunning visuals. We had a few questions and answers with them. What are your names?
Alex Riggen (guitars, vocals) & Nick Pompou (Drums)
What’s the duo’s official stage name (showbiz name) and how did the name come about?
Murnau, named after the silent film director. We felt our sound and his visual style had similarities. Plus, it sounded cool.
How did you guys get together?
We grew up together and have been in multiple bands/projects since Freshman year of high school. So, a long history.
What was your first release as Murnau?
We recorded a Demo EP composed of Static, Silhouette and Answers. Some of those songs still make it on our live setlist every now and then.
How long has Murnau been making music?
16+ years although with several long breaks.
How would you describe the music Murnau typically creates?
Loud, raw and atmospheric. We try to maintain a full and catchy sound even though we are just a 2-piece.
What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
Expressing emotions and ideas that can’t be conveyed through words or visuals.
What feelings or reactions do you hope to arouse in people who listen to your music? Are you surprised by the reactions you get?
Depends on the song. But as long as it makes them feel or think about something new, that’s our goal. And if they want to listen to our music a second, third or more times, even better.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
Hard to say, but every time we play a show or release a new track, it feels like a new high point all over again. Always looking to the next thing.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The ability to reach anyone anywhere in the world with minimal effort is huge. It also increases the competition and being able to reach audiences through all the noise. But, overall, the Internet has had a positive impact on artists reaching fans.
Has Murnau ever participated in any music competitions? Did you win any prizes?
We have not.
What is this new release about?
The song can be interpreted by the listener. Watch the video, hear the lyrics and create your own story.
Who and how many people worked on it?
Nick and I recorded all the tracks. Mixed by @rossmixes on Instagram. Mastered by Golden Mastering.
What are you working on next? Any future plans or projects in the pipeline that we should look out for?
Always new stuff on the horizon. We plan on working on a new live set to start playing more shows, but there’s no doubt we’ll start writing and recording for our next release soon as well.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
We just appreciate anyone who takes the time to listen and give new music a chance. None of this would mean anything if it wasn’t heard and shared by our fans.
