Get To Know Lil‘ Rubio And His Release “Bad All Night”

Lil‘ Rubio is an Austria, Vienna based musician, composer and producer who is well versed in the arts of rap, hip hop and pop genres. Rubio has just released an original single titled “bad all night” which talks about relationships and breakups. We had a few questions and answers with him. Below are exclusive details on Lil‘ Rubio and his new release.

What is the story behind your stage name Lil‘ Rubio?

So, when I was 16, I went to Spain to live there for half a year, in order of a student exchange program. In the school in my town there were like 500 kids of which 499 had dark or brown hair and only one kid who had blonde hair. This kid was me. So, because I was the only blonde kid there, they started calling me “Rubio” (which means the blonde one or just blonde) instead of my actual name. I really liked that and it stuck to my head. When I was starting with music, I needed a stage name and I Went with Lil’ because that’s what all the new rappers do and Rubio, because it was still in my head and I liked it.

When did you decide to pursue music as a career?

I first started to upload tracks to SoundCloud and make beats for fun. But soon I realized that my voice sounded good, my texts had potential and a lot of people told me to keep going and take it seriously. At some point, maybe after dropping my second EP I just knew that this was the one thing that I wanted to do my whole life and I started to take it seriously.

How would you describe the music you typically create?

The music I usually make has a melodic sample and chilled vibes, paired with crispy well hitting drums. I usually sing but sometimes I tend to rap over my songs. But in general, I would say you could expect a melodic vibe and some catchy, well sung vocals from a Lil’ Rubio song.

Who (living or dead) inspires you as an artist and why?

I would say Russ does the most. There’s a lot of great artists out there that inspire me, but Russ for sure is my idol. This guy dropped 11 albums before he even got noticed slightly. He didn’t ever stop and in the end, he made it, all by himself. That just shows me that with hard work and endless motivation, you can achieve anything you want in this life and that it Is too precious to waste your time with something that doesn’t fulfill you one hundred percent.

What’s your creative process like?

To be honest, most of my hooks and texts come to my mind while I’m driving. I Start freestyling in the car and when something is catchy and good, I’ll write it down. When I have the hook, I’ll make a beat around it or hit up a friend of mine, who is a beatmaker, who always provides the right vibes. When I’m done recording in my closet, I listen to it like 20 times and if I still don’t have enough of it afterwards ill make it my next release.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?

The whole process about making a song itself just fulfills me. I get very passionate when I’m writing about something that’s happened to me and when I see or notice that there’s people who relate to my music it just makes me the happiest a human can possibly be. Also, while performing and people sing the song word for word with me, it’s something that makes me want this even more and so passionate to keep going.

How best can you describe the music atmosphere in Vienna, Austria?

The music atmosphere in Austria is very split up in many genres but I would say that German rap, pop and edm are the three biggest genres that people listen to. There’s a lot of upcoming new underground rappers and talents like me, who are just waiting to be discovered but lack exposure to a bigger music market than the Austrian.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I’m a really passionate and good football player who recently just won the league that my team is playing in. So, on and off the pitch I would say that I’m a champion. Nah, just kidding but besides music, I would say that football and traveling and diving into new cultures are my biggest passions.

What has been the high point of your career so far?

There was a newcomer competition on the second biggest radio channel in Austria. The channel has an estimated 2 million listeners and I signed up for the contest, submitted a song of mine and actually won the contest. So, my song got broadcasted for a week on national radio, which was just breathtaking for me every time it got played.

Which musician would you like to collaborate with?

I think I would love to collaborate with Russ, as he can sing, rap and write texts like a god. Also, like I previously mentioned, he’s my biggest idol and I look up to him.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I think that there are so many people out there who don’t lack skill but recognition. The music industry just focuses on big numbers and repetitive boring Pop songs that the radio stations keep playing over and over again, just so people can sing that one catchy line and buy copies of that said song, while the rest of the song is trash. I think I would love to see it if there was a chance for smaller, really talented artists to get more exposure without having to sell their soul or pay someone a fortune.

What is your release “bad all night” about?

Bad all night is a breakup story where the girl cheated on the guy. Normally, the girl should feel bad for that but the song is about the situation where the girl blames the guy for her actions and in that the guy feels like shit, can’t sleep and blames himself for the failed relationship.

Who and how many people worked on it?

I got the beat from a German producer I work with more frequently. I did the vocals and the recordings by myself and sent the whole thing to another German guy, who is my mix master engineer, who finished the track, so 3 people worked on it.

What are you working on next? Any future plans or projects in the pipeline that we should look out for?

After this release I’ve got a summer jam planned and also already produced it. I think after a short vocational break I will be back with good summer vibes and the jam for the summer.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

That I love and appreciate every single one of them and that we are all in this together. #Teamrubio is a community and not a one man show
