What’s your official stage name and why did you choose it?
Professionally, my name is JOIE GREY. The word “JOIE” is French for joy, and joy is what I want listeners to feel when they hear my music. We could all use more joy nowadays.
When did you decide to pursue music as a career?
Music has always been a major part of my life, but I finally decided to go for it during my senior year of high school.
How would you describe the music you typically create?
It’s hard for me to find the accurate words and labels to describe it, and the standards for what is considered Pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop are constantly changing. However, I would say my music is pretty soulful and rhythmic but also mainstream in its appeal.
What’s your creative process like?
99% of the time, I’ll make an instrumental that I think sounds good and write the song around the music. If it gets me moving, that’s usually a good sign.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Kanye West are my biggest influences, and I consider them to be some of the greatest musicians of all time. In today’s landscape, I think artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Doja Cat are pushing music forward.
What feelings or reactions do you hope to arouse in people who listen to your music? Are you surprised by the reactions you get?
Happiness. I truly believe that music is the most universal language on Earth. At its best, music can bring happiness and joy to anybody. I’m never surprised at the reactions I get, but I’m ALWAYS honored to know that people have strong, positive feelings toward my music.
What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
Music has been a huge part of my life since birth. To me, there’s no better feeling than hearing a really good song for the first time. I get a huge grin on my face, and my body dances involuntarily. It’s even better when you’re the one who makes the song that causes people to react that way.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
I’m a massive nerd. I LOVE video games, movies, and cartoons. I’m also really into sports, primarily basketball.
What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
This isn’t advice that was given to me, but seeing the massive success of Bryson Tiller when I was in high school (2016) had a massive impact on me and music as a whole. Watching him achieve those heights by simply making a good song in his bedroom, using low-end studio equipment, showed me that I had a shot.
Which qualities do you think make a great musician?
The best qualities that musicians can have are perseverance, patience, and a willingness to collaborate. The road is long and hard, so help is required.
Have you ever participated in any music competitions? Did you win any prizes?
I’ve done countless talent shows and open mics. I’ve won a good amount of them and lost just as many. It’s always good to perform in front of an audience that has no idea who you are. It’s like jumping into the deep end and learning how to swim.
What is this new release about?
“Untitled” is about a complicated relationship that has devolved into something mostly physical. I wrote the song during a bad breakup and my first year of college. I was in a big city, trying to find out who I wanted to be, and the song has those emotions in it.
Who and how many people worked on it?
The beat was produced by a producer named Young Taylor. Once I heard it, I immediately wrote lyrics and recorded the entire song in less than an hour.
What are you working on next? Any future plans or projects in the pipeline that we should look out for?
I have a bunch of new releases ready for the Summer. My biggest of which is a song, titled All That Muscle, that I’m super excited about. We are currently working on the music video.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
Remember the name, JOIE GREY. This is just the beginning, and there’s tons of new music and content coming soon.
