Jay Meadows is a Canada, Toronto based musician and composer who is well versed in the arts of rap and hip-hop genre. Jay has just released an original single titled “Steve Rogers”. We had a few questions and answers with him. Below are exclusive details on Jay Meadows and his new release.
What’s your official stage name and why did you choose it?
My stage name is Jay Meadows and it’s actually a homage to the area of my city that I’m from, Meadowvale. Meadowvale is a section of the city of Mississauga and it is where I grew up.
What got you into music?
I actually got into music at the age of 8 when a friend showed me 50 Cent’s “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” album. I fell in love and was really into hip hop since then. I think the first album I ever bought was Nellyville. Later on, I started playing the drums at the age of 10. My family places a big importance on music, with my dad playing the guitar and my sister who plays piano. So, at 10, I was told to pick an instrument. I chose the drums and was actually in a phase where I listened to a lot of classic and punk rock, especially in high school. Eventually I ventured back into hip hop and started writing and recording my own music.
How would you describe the music you typically create?
The music I currently make I would say is hip hop but with a strong focus on melody and I even sometimes venture into R&B. I got 2 projects “Neon Nostalgia 1 & 2” that are really r&b influenced. Of course, there are times where I just wanna spit bars so I’ll do that from time to time too.
Which song do you feel is the best music you’ve ever released and why?
I think I get better with every song that I make because I keep learning more and more about myself as an artist which helps to mould my sound. I got favourites though such as “Most Nights, want you to know, Steve Rogers”. I got some music in the vault as well right now and that’s some of the best work I’ve done. It’ll drop soon!
What feelings or reactions do you hope to arouse in people who listen to your music? Are you surprised by the reactions you get?
Honestly when I’m making r&b I really just wanna have it been relatable so that when I talk about my experiences, people can really vibe with it because they’ve been in my shoes before too. When I make the more rap focused stuff it’s kinda the same but sometimes I just wanna make a banger that people can turn up to.
If you could have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
If my fans could remember one thing about me, it’d be that I am hungry and motivated to be successful in the music industry. I’d want them to know where I came from, my story, and hopefully I can motivate and inspire some people along the way.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
I think the internet has made it more accessible for a lot of amazing artists to be discovered. Especially with TikTok. That’s a platform that I am going to be much more present on as well.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
Yeah, I play alot of basketball, I’m a big Marvel fan, I actually spent the pandemic watching all the movies in chronological order with my sister. I also DJ, and I’m into stocks and crypto.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
Some of my inspirations are Kanye, Drake, Lil Wayne, Eminem, The Weeknd, and from business as well as musical, Hov.
Describe your favourite and least favourite part about being a musician.
My favourite part is creating and having the freedom to make my own art and be inspired by so many new sounds. My least favourite is how present you really gotta be on social media. You need to be posting daily and sometimes it’s tough to keep up but you gotta do what you gotta do to stay relevant in such an online industry.
What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 5 to 10 years?
I definitely wanna do my own tour by then. I love to perform so much so that’d be big for me. I’d love to work with some of my favourite artists and continue to build a strong following too.
What is this new release about?
Steve Rogers was a track that was solely inspired by my confidence. I started working on it after I found out a track that a friend and I made had been placed onto the Northern Bars editorial playlist on Spotify. That was really big for me and it was the first time that happened. It kinda made me feel that all the effort I’m putting in is not for nothing and that I can really hang with some of the best artists in the country. So, I made this song just based off of all those feelings
What are you working on next? Any future plans or projects in the pipeline that we should look out for?
Im just focusing on dropping more singles. I got an idea for an EP as well that’s going to be a sound that’s not really the type of music I typically put out. But it’s a sound I’ve been inspired by so I just wanted to make a project focusing around that.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
Just that a lot of you may not know me now. But I’m gonna work tirelessly so that in a few years I promise, you will.
