What is your name?
Gil Golden is the name I use in Golden Richards.
What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?
I am a songwriter and guitarist for our band Golden Richards and would like to focus on the band and not so much on myself as this is a group effort for sure. The band lineup is –
Gil Golden – songwriter, guitar
Billy Richards – songwriter, lead vocals, guitar, producer
Marianne Magic – vocals, keyboards
Sonny Dee – Bass
Henry Western – drums
How did you get into what you do (music, modelling, art, dance, etc.?)
I love music and played some guitar as a teenager but dropped it for many years. Started up again about 10 years ago and really worked hard on it. Luckily I met a lot of great people by taking group classes at Old Town School in Chicago and through a radio show I host on WNUR called the Power Pop Shoppe. I met Billy Richards and we have the same taste in rock music and we became friends and started to collaborate on songs. Then we wanted to record and play live so we added our friends Marianne, Sonny, and Henry and became the power pop rock band Golden Richards.
Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
Everyone in the band loves music and is inspired by what we heard growing up and now so we dig classic rock, old school power pop, alternative rock especially from the 1990s, even funk and soul, if it is good and moves people we are into it. Specific bands we dig are Sloan, Cheap Trick, Weezer, Nada Surf, Fountains of Wayne, Beatles, Stones, on and on.
What was your first project and the people you worked with, and which year?
Our first single was Borg vs. McEnroe released at the end of 2020. We released 3 singles in 2021 – Honey West Kung Fu, Zach Attack – a song I wrote for my cousin Zach who passed away at 24 and Cmon Cmon (The Makeout Song).
How long have you been doing what you do?
As mentioned earlier, I have been playing and writing really for the last 10 years but I also have a radio show called the Power Pop Shoppe which keeps me tuned into new bands and I used to manage bands as well. We try to connect with others in the music community when we dig their music.
What do you look out for in this line of business?
We are definitely not kids so we are not getting in a van and touring but we love making music together and playing live shows in Chicago – We are playing at the International Pop Overthrow Festival in April in Chicago.
What is this new release about?
Shake Your Hair is a song I wrote inspired by a time in my mid-20s when I was in law school and in a long term relationship that was having issues and I was doing what was expected of me by others but I was not sure I was on the right path. I met someone new who was exciting and it made me question those things.
Who and how many people worked on it?
Golden Richards is a great group effort. I write and come up with a basic melody and chords. Billy Richard is super talented and he adds some lyrics and great musical ideas and produces our songs in his basement studio. Marianne, Sonny and Henry chip in with some great ideas as well.
What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?
We are having fun and so glad that people dig our music. We have been played on SiriusXM underground garage on the Rodney on the Rock show, Bill Kelly’s show and Goldie’s Garage and on stations and podcasts in America and around the globe. We want to keep making music and playing live shows.
