Flatfoot Sam Takes You On A Ride In His Boathouse

Flatfoot Sam In an old lifeboat station in Cornwall, wrote this wonderful piece boathouse. Nothing in particular inspired this single, but that area of Cornwall has inspired a number of TripField tracks in the past.

From a young age, music has been a part of Flatfoots Sam’s life. The only thing that could fill the void in him was music. He was frequently surrounded by rounded musical instruments.

Flatfoot Sam later began writing club bngers in the late 1990s, and he has not looked back or stopped writing since then.

Flatfoot Sam started djing because he loved music and couldn’t stop writing and performing it.

What is your stage name

Flatfoot Sam

Is there a story behind your stage name?

Not really, I have nicely shaped feet and my name is Jon

What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

When I was a young teen music filled a void that I guess otherwise may have been a bit of loneliness, not that you particularly realise it at the time. Wasn’t long before I got into dance music and raves and then…take off

Are you from a musical or artistic family?

Not really to be fair, Mum and Dad used to listen to classical music but not a lot else.

Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

I don’t recall anyone in particular but I remember watching people djing at The Rhythm Station in Aldershot and thinking I wanted to do that, watching a paid of SL1210s spinning dead level on a stage banging out fat beats was too much not to get involved with.

How did you learn to sing/write/to play?

I dj’d for quite a few years and wrote a few club bangers in the late 90s but I taught myself to use Ableton in 2020 and haven’t looked back from there.

What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform?

Carter USM at Cornwall Colysium in 1992.

How could you describe your music?

Quite different to a lot of stuff that you hear; genre-bending and with spiritual depth

Describe your creative process?

This track started off with a chord progression in FMinor to which I built the bassline, breakbeats and percussion around. I take a long time with TripField basslines to get them deep and meaningful. This one is a ripper.

The breakdown features a tweaked classic bass sound called Lately Bass, from the Yamaha Tx81Z and was in “Everything Starts with an E” by E-zee posse and other famous 90s bangers. It was also in Whigfield “Saturday Night” but we don’t tell people about this as they can stop talking to you. The Korg M1 piano gives the break that old school rave vibe.

What is your main inspiration?
For writing music it can be a sample, but it is often a nice chord progression.

What musician do you admire most and why?

I really like bands like Massive Attack and Portishead which bring that darker edgy kind of vibe to the stage.

Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

I did used to release harder dance music, and I still write this kind of stuff too but I am just trying this particular journey at the moment as it is different and sometimes swimming against the tide has better results.

Who do you see as your main competitor?

The other 8M artists on Spotify! There are so many people releasing music these days that it is hard to get heard.

What are your interests outside of music?

Reading, running, racing cars, eating and travelling

If it wasn’t a music career, what would you be doing?

Sadly, music isn’t my main career so I would love to give up the day job and work on music 100%

What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

Getting heard. With the access to cheap production tools now, you can release music on a budget and so there are many people doing this. Listeners are flooded with platforms to listen to stuff through and the age of buying albums and listening to them in full has diminished somewhat.

If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?

Perhaps working out a structure whereby up and coming artists have more access to gigs and opportunities.

What are your plans for the coming months & do you have any artistic collaboration plans

Following on from the 1st TripField album last year in December, BoatHouse is probably the only TripField single this year but others have been, and are being written for the next album, including some tracks with live vocals from Laurence Georgin from EOS for what will be the second album and will be released in 2023/4 following one or two more singles.

What message would you like to give to your fans?

Thanks for supporting this project and taking the time out to listen to my tunes, it means everything.
