European Union Organizes Music Concert Against Child Labour

The European Union Delegation in Ghana through the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) organized a music concert that took place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The event saw about 11 singers perform songs and poems centred on child labour and the measures leaders can adopt to stop curtail it.

This actually forms part of a national awareness campaign on child labour with patronage from the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP).

Dignitaries who graced the special occasion include the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Honorable Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Mrs Anne-Claire Dufay who is the UNICEF country director, Office of the Head of the Local Government Service and other officials from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), German Agency for International Cooperation.

The World Day Against Labour is marked every June 12 and this year – 2021 has been designated as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, the EU is exploring various options to increase effectiveness and ensure sustainable impacts of our actions to stop child labour.

The EU is dedicated to promoting decent work and ending child labour worldwide and it is a top priority for the EU. Children’s rights are universal and the EU reinforces its commitment to protect, promote and fulfil these rights across the globe and ensure there are efforts in giving children the future they deserve.

Together with its national and international partners, the EU aims to increase communication around child labour in Ghana and with this, communicating on child labour is crucial to building awareness and trigger changes.

The European Union, however, believes that “not all work performed by children is considered child labour. Light work for limited hours performed by children to help family farming is beneficial provided it does not interfere with their education and well-being.”
