Eoin Shannon Pours a Glass of Heavy Sorrow on “Every Drunk’s Gotta Story”

Irish songwriter Eoin Shannon drops us into the deep end of the night with “Every Drunk’s Gotta Story”. The Cork native’s latest release arrives hot on the heels of his January 2025 debut album, “Hello Forever”, but this February 2026 concept record is an entirely different beast. Sitting here in Ghana, feeling the warm, humid 9 PM breeze roll through my window, I find myself instantly displaced. Shannon’s haunting vocals and his backing roster of top-class session musicians immediately pull me into the icy, smoke-stained air of an empty lounge bar at 2 AM. The album operates as a crying prayer for the brokenhearted, packed with vivid character studies of everyday people trying to outrun their demons.

Shannon acts as our weary guide through an underworld of bruised egos and bad choices. On “Bartender”, slow, soulful lounge jazz chords weave elegantly around the vocals, mapping out the lonely urge to seek emotional grounding from the person pouring the drinks. It perfectly captures our strange human reflex to dump our heaviest mental baggage onto a familiar stranger over a sticky counter. The mood violently twists with “Puppetmaster”. Here, a bouncy, darkly comedic vaudeville jazz rhythm collides with maniacal laughter, soundtracking an unhinged surrender to external temptation. You can almost feel the strings aggressively jerking your arms.

Yet, there is intense empathy carved into the grit. Shannon explores catastrophic regret on the acoustic blues-infused “Jezebel”, laying out a mournful, weeping melody that feels suffocatingly remorseful over a fractured home. “Ghosts Of Yesterday” uses a slowcore, vibrating low-end drone to trap the listener in the claustrophobia of lingering past romances. I found myself staring at the ceiling during “Game Night In Hell”, quietly absorbing its sparse, melancholic waltz as it spelled out the absolute loss of gambling away one’s future.

Even amidst the heavy sorrow, Shannon knows we occasionally need a breather. “Pull Up A Stool” pivots gracefully into a gentle pop ballad where soft, cascading notes provide a warm sanctuary of mutual belonging. Similarly, “Pour Me Some Unconditional Love” leans on a dreamy indie pop rhythm that wraps you in profound, soothing safety.

By the time we hit the raw Americana weeping of “Last Call For The Broken Hearted”, the release solidifies into a desolate, spiritual search for redemption. Listening to this album leaves a lingering ache in the chest, forcing a rather uncomfortable thought: why do we consistently seek out the darkest, saddest corners of the room when we want to feel the most human?
