We had a casual chat with him during which he disclosed further information about his music career, his aims and objectives in the field of music, and frankly discussed additional information regarding his album and most recent song. Continue reading to find out more about him.

What is your real and official showbiz name?
Rich Freitas from Mystic, Ct / my solo alias is Ellery Twining

How long have you been making music and what attracted you to it?
I joined my first band just after my sixteenth birthday, in 1985. I was shocked when the guitar player brought songs he had written himself for us to work on at the very first practice.

As a kid in the 1970s, the “garage band” was a real thing, and one day, walking home from the school playground, I stopped to watch a neighbourhood garage band kick out the jams. I knew right at that moment I wanted to be a musician.

What were your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
17 Relics, a four-piece rock band, in July of 1985. Our second practice was the day of the Live Aid shows in London and Philadelphia. In fact, my wife of thirty-one years attended the Philadelphia show. 17 Relics were a guitar/bass/drums/vocal set-up and we wrote our own songs from day one.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
I was singularly inspired by the decades-long music scene in the Mystic / New London CT area. In 1977, New Londoners Hugh Birdsall and Peter Detmold flew to London to see in person the Sex Pistols, and every other seminal punk band they could catch live in the short time they were in England.

Upon their return to the States, they began the storied institution that was The Reducers, and hard-rocking four-piece that created a musical movement over four decades. When I first saw The Reducers, I knew that I wanted to be a musician in a Rock Band. And that attitude was then spread to the next generation after me, and the generation after them.

What are your friend’s and parents’ thoughts on your career in singing?
I’m not sure anyone thinks I can sing, but reinventing myself has seemingly impressed certain people.

What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
Challenging myself is always the core concept for me. I am currently writing an acoustic follow-up to REVENGE, and another record written entirely on electric guitar with drum machines.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
How much space do we have? As with most technological advances in music, it has helped and has caused chaos. When jukeboxes first appeared in public spaces, songwriters were concerned their profit margin would suffer under the new “canned music.”

So, the story remains the same. The internet and technology have opened recording opportunities that were unthinkable when I made my first record in 1987. And the result is that now anyone can make a record, which in turn floods the market; just like the jukebox.

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
Come to terms with the idea of The Point of Completion.

What is your current project about?
REVENGE is about capturing the essence of a moment, and reflecting on how those moments become a bedrock in our lives.

What does this song mean to you?
WEATHERALL is about the passing of time, the passing of torches, and the passing of influential people.

What are your hobbies?
I’m a fairly decent garden designer.

What do you do aside from this profession?
I work at the best record store in America, The Mystic Disc in Mystic, CT.

What is one message you would give to your fans?
When beginning any project, or art, remember to first Clean The Palette.
