Cloud Ray Premieres His Latest EP ‘Urban City Elegance’

Cloud Ray is a young and promising hip-hop and pop artist that hails from Middlesex in the state of New Jersey. Cloud Ray has made it his mission to advance the boundaries of every musical style that he appreciates listening to.

His music is an exotic combination of Hip Hop culture with Mainstream Pop, with occasional spices of Electronic Dance Music and House. His music has been compared to a melting pot.

Cloud Ray is known for producing music that feels lively and catchy while still addressing emotive and accessible subject themes in the lyrics. It’s possible that you feel the want to get up and dance, that you want to sit down and “vibe” to the music that is playing, or that you want to sing a song from the project as if it were yours.

Cloud Ray is going for that connection, that personal time with themselves or with others, and the sensations that come along with the music. Cloud Ray’s identity requires him to be both unrepentant and vulnerable at the same time.

On his new extended play (EP), titled “Urban City Elegance,” Cloud Ray provides colossal emotions that are layered over hard-hitting percussion and fast-paced synth arpeggios, all while preserving a lively beat throughout the track.

I had a personal interaction with him in which he spoke about his musical career and his path as an artist. During our interview, he shared more about his journey.

What is your real and official showbiz name?
My real name is Adam Hitchman and on Stage, I present myself as ‘Cloud Ray’.

How long have you been making music and what attracted you to it?
I have been writing songs since I was about 8 years old. I didn’t start out writing my own songs though. While I was in elementary school, one of my key memories is staying inside during recess or playtime to write out the lyrics of popular songs I heard and memorized from the radio.

Growing up, I was heavily influenced by the older kids and adults around me that music was the most ever-changing yet connective creativity that anyone can tap into. I also watched a lot of VH1 and MTV when they still played music videos and I would tell myself that someday I would have my own creative music videos there.

What were your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
My first official project titled, Urban City Elegance, under ‘Cloud Ray’ is set to release on August 19th, 2022. In this project, you will hear the results of the collaboration between the producer Treadway and myself.

In the studio together, our energies work so well because we are able to almost complete each other’s sentences in a musical format. He would know just what kinds of sounds I was looking for and I would know just what kind of energy he would want me to produce on the tracks. The feeling of comfortability being me and sharing my experiences with him made this project feel so much more secure for me.

I can’t wait for people to hear what we have created together and I am so humbled by everything I have learned from him thus far as well as the experience to work with such a prominent producer. Another key member of this project is my vocal coach, Natalie Kaye of O-Kaye Productions. She plays a key role in allowing me to discover my voice while naturally acclimating me to the commercial pop/hip hop world.

Her techniques and inspiring advice have to lead me down a road I have been searching for, for quite some time now. I am beyond lucky and grateful to have met Natalie and that she would work on this project with me to bring out the best performance possible at the time.

As I navigated through different vocal teachers I never quite really connected them with my endgame vision and I think that had a lot to do with just leading me where I am supposed to be. Natalie changed all of that for me. Not only has she helped me mature vocally but she has also provided me with the knowledge and experience of growing as a creative, an artist, and just as a person overall.

I’ve seen quite a few bumps in this road so far and I am grateful to have her help me circumnavigate them.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
Some things that inspire me are creativity and drawing outside the lines. I have always appreciated art that ‘follows the rules’ for lack of better phrasing, however, when I discover art where the creator wasn’t laser-focused on perfection I find myself in a calm yet motivated physical state of being.

I almost immediately want to get into my craft and start creating based on the energy I received from that imperfect creation. It’s a strange reaction that I haven’t quite figured out yet but I am rolling with the tide and allowing the answer to come to me in good time.

What are your friend’s and parents’ thoughts on your career in singing?
My biggest supporter was my mom. She encouraged me to continue moving forward with my passion for creating music as a career. She supported me through college after high school to get my certifications and degrees and she stood tall at her podium to make sure everyone knew just how proud of me she was.

At the end of June this year, my mom passed away and left such a huge hole in my heart and life. It was a sudden tear in reality for me but I know that she would be here telling me to keep going no matter what. I am determined to make her proud and fulfil a mission in this lifetime to make a change in the world.

What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
Most of the major challenges I face in this career path have to do with finances. I think that when you have such grand ideas and a very clear vision of where you see yourself there is still the challenge of figuring out how to get there and support it.

Money can give you quite an easy ride to where you want to be but in my case I am living paycheck to paycheck in an economy that does not stop to check if I am okay, it can be very difficult to get by. Some of the opportunities that artists can really benefit from requiring to you have a little bit of establishment in order to see some traction. I am just now getting myself out there as an artist and it’s no easy feat.

Nobody knows who I am yet. On the other hand, there is the mental struggle of hesitation for me and doubting the timing and quality of what I am putting into the airwaves. I work hard and am also very hard on myself so it would be simple to say that I am my own worst critic. Nevertheless, I persevere where I can and strive to achieve the greatest outcome.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
I think that the internet has played such a major role in redefining the industry that I am a part of. Studios and production equipment that was once exclusive has now become accessible to everyone in the comfort of their bedrooms.

The knowledge that could only be gained through years of experience and the right connections can now be learned through 30-second videos on Tik Tok. That’s an extreme leap in advancement and change brought to the industry by the internet.

Needless to say, we are also now living in a time of viral sensations and memes so any one person’s content including music can blow up overnight and be shared around the world instantly. That to me is terrifying and amazing all at the same time!

Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
My advice to aspiring songwriters is to write whenever you can about whatever you want. There are NO RULES. People have told me along the way that I can’t do this or I can’t do that or this doesn’t sound right and guess what, they were all full of s***.

Most songs are written with intention and come from a sacred place within yourself. Believe in yourself, and your journey, and rely on people who are respectable and valid to give you the same respect and feedback IF and when you need it.

What is your current project about?
My project ‘Urban City Elegance’ is really about a collection of experiences that I went through as Adam but wasn’t able to express correctly or the way I wanted to. Cloud Ray is able to deliver these experiences in a catchy way that also brings two genres of music onto the playing field.

Not only can Hip Hop audiences enjoy this project but the Pop music crowd can also have a really good time. Most importantly, the stories being told in each song are really meant to connect with someone in the hopes that what Adam goes through in his life can help or affect others that may be going through the same thing.

What does this song mean to you?
‘Let Me Go’ in particular is a song about a breakup that I suffered greatly from. I was in a dedicated relationship for 4 years and ultimately things came to an end. Soon after, the end of the relationship continued to progress negatively for me. It created a lot of turmoil in my personal life and all I really wanted was to be left alone as well as to stop drawing myself back into the negative situation.

It was harder than I thought it would be. I wrote this song 2 years ago and I can’t wait to share it with the world because I am certain that I am not alone in dealing with a relationship or a situation like this. I also feel that the song can be interpreted for many different avenues of life and I am looking forward to braving enough people sharing their own experiences in relation to ‘Let Me Go’.

What are your hobbies?
What are some hobbies of mine? I like reading. Mystery and Horror books intrigue me the most but I also am fond of autobiographies. They are definitely polar opposites but keep me entertained. I also like to games.

I have an Xbox and a Mac where I play games like ‘Call Of Duty’ or simulation games like ‘Planet Coaster’. Another hobby of mine is hiking. I love going on a hike to disconnect from the internet and reconnect with beautiful nature and the natural frequencies around me. I find myself stimulated by the outdoors to be creative.

Out of all my hobbies, hiking is most definitely my favourite. I am a heavy thrill-seeker as well. In my spare time, I like to travel to amusement parks and carnivals to delight myself in some of the scarier and more adventurous rides and rollercoasters. I have plans to travel the world with this hobby in mind.

What do you do aside from this profession?
Aside from being a Recording Artist and Performer, I freelance as a recording/mixing engineer, songwriter, producer, model, artist development agent and music video cameo personality as my main hustle. I love what I do because I stay directly involved with my passion and feel so much more connected to creative energy. I love discovering talent as well as new perspectives.

What is one message you would give to your fans?
One message I would give to fans, soon-to-be of my music or even people who don’t know me yet is that I am making music for all people around the world and not for myself. So many things happen in my life that are worth sharing and that’s why I am here in this lifetime.

I am sharing m experience and the music because it is my purpose. My favourite rapper, J Cole, has a record titled ‘Nobody’s Perfect’. I really want to be able to emphasise that with my music because I feel that we have gotten to a social point in time where flaws are pointed out in a negative light before appreciating the beauty in it. Without flaws, perfection can’t exist.
