What is your real and official showbiz name?
Simply, Andy Roda
How long have you been making music and what attracted you to it?
I’ve always sung as a kid, but I recall consciously singing and playing the piano at the age of 5, writing my first song at 8, and making the decision to become a musician at the age of 11. It’s been my profession and lifestyle for more than 2 decades.
I started singing/playing the piano in church, and boys choir, and garnered a lot of support early on, being the first and only Filipino kid singing publicly (since being a runner up in a local talent competition in my home town Copenhagen).
I learned to produce and engineer music as a teenager, and through studying with some of the best in New York City.
What were your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
My debut album “DISH” was released on Virgin Records in 1999, which I mainly wrote and co-produced with Swedish producer Statikk (Erik Svensson) and my homegirl Joleen Belle.
It spawned three hit singles, an opening act for The Backstreet Boys, and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice of the Spice Girls), and was my entry to move to New York, where I literally “graduated” Life as a musician, singing weekly at legendary Ashford & Simpson’s “Sugarbar” – my musical mentors, and another producer/writer mentor, Gary Haase (Celine Dion, N*SYNC). I learned from the best!
Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
THE POSSIBILITY! Music, Arts, Dance – LIFE inspires me. I learned and gathered the tools to express myself through studying the best and trial and error of course. My motivation is rooted in knowing we have this Life to share our goodness with the World. To be a vessel of the Source.
What are your friend’s and parents’ thoughts on your career in singing?
They’ve supported it from day 1. It’s part of who I AM, and they help me become better at expressing that.
What are some of the challenges you face in your career path?
As a multi-hyphenate who does everything from creation to marketing, there are just not enough hours during the day. The practice is to stay focused, and patient, and know it will all work in the end. To keep diligent, have integrity with my work and be TRUE to Oneself!
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
It’s the BEST (and worst) time to be an Artist. The contrast is bigger than ever, so it depends on what “end of the stick” you focus on, and where you put your attention. I focus on the endless possibilities! It’s a GIFT to be an Artist NOW!
Do you have any advice for aspiring songwriters?
Keep writing / creating every day if possible. Hang out with people better than you. Don’t slack on your talent. It’s a muscle. Keep working it. Be mindful, have integrity, courage, and LEARN the business – your rights as a creator, and when someone says “no” that really means “YES” somewhere else.
What is your current project about?
Life is a movement towards our wholeness. My Art reflects this journey. “Closer” is about Love, and the first initial feelings when meeting that special someone.
What does this song mean to you?
It’s a song about the Love of my Life. A snapshot of the early days, when all was still fresh and new.
What are your hobbies?
As a musician, dancer, and actor, my work is mostly playtime. Therefore my hobby is really anything relaxing, like cooking and travelling!
What do you do aside from this profession?
Enjoying life and nature, walking my mini dachshund Ruby, and exploring new sights and locations with my partner. Travelling!
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you to all those who’ve supported my career so far. I hope you’ll enjoy my offerings as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them. Life is GOOD.
