2021 FCLMA “Pop Artist Of The Year”, Justin Maki, Releases His Grand Bend Inspired Song Of The Summer, “Simplicity”
Justin Maki is back with another funky jam called “Simplicity”(listen here), this one just in time for the arrival of Summer 2021.“Simplicity” encapsulates a beautiful lazy beach day in Lambton Shores, specifically Grand Bend. The anticipated single comes months after the critically acclaimed Fall 2020 release, “Different Kind of Love”, and precedes a bundle of singles remaining on the forthcoming record, “New Flame”.
This new record represents a shift insound and in branding for Justin – from a focus on Folk-Pop (City in Colour, Dan Mangan, Mumford & Sons) to what he calls “Flirtatious Jazz-Pop”. He positions his sound somewhere between Allen Stone, John Mayer, Bruno Mars, and Robin Thicke, carefully drawing from the R&B, Soul, Funk, and Jazz traditions and polishing it with a Pop veneer for greater accessibility.“Simplicity”is the 3rd single off of“New Flame”, following “Love Language” and “Different Kind of Love”.
Justin has received praise for everything from his expansive voice, to his playful lyrics, skillful guitar work, and intricate arrangements. Critics have often commented on his “impressive vocal range”, “dreamy falsetto” and the strength of his voice overall. Others have characterized his music as “stellar”, “velvety”, “sultry”, “provocative”, and “instantly infectious”. He has also scored a featurein 519 Magazine and a mention in Exclaim!
Justin’s fans have complimented him on his competence and appeal, expressing that he is “a true musical artist [with an amazing voice]”, that he embodies a true “professional and [that he is] tremendously talented”, and even going so far as to say that “he should have been scouted by Usher at 12”. The last single,“Different Kind of Love” was qualified for offering a “flirtatious, groove-inducing energy”: expect no less from “Simplicity”
Justin has been actively performing for the last 16 years, slowly finding his voice and raising his public profile. After living in Japan until the age of 11, Justin moved to St. Thomas, ON with his family, where he enrolled in a rock school called Studio Arts. Here, he cut his teeth in numerous bands, playing guitar/singing lead vocals and writing for projects like Make Noise and Just In Time.
Eventually, he left Studio Arts and pursued a project called Undying Promise. This pop-punk trio went on to win a 2010 Jack Richardson Music Award, a round of SuperNova Battle of the Bands, and the 104.7 Heart FM Talent Contest. After prominent involvement in the music department at his high school, Justin pursued post-secondary education at Western University in “Popular MusicStudies”, a transition that forced him to step away from Undying Promise and focus on his solo
Such a shift led him to play over 1,000 shows;tour the country 2.5 times (spanning Regina to Moncton); open for industry heavy-weights as The Sheepdogs, The Mudmen, Olivia Lunny, Neon Dreams, and Monster Truck; and win the campus wide Battle of the Bandsin 2015, as well as Western Voice in 2016. Justin most recently won a FCLMA, dubbing him the 2021 “Pop Artist of The Year”in London, ON. Justin will soon release a great majority of the singles off of “New Flame”
and widen his reach on all social platforms.
Justin has remained optimistic and channeled his creativity in favour of being resourceful during the pandemic. In Spring of 2020, Justin ran a weekly FB and IG livestream, performing covers on Saturdays and originals on Sundays. His thematically appropriate,“Different Kind of Love”, received radio play on the CBC format across the country in addition to a handful of otherstations in Canada and the US. Justin also landed on “Canada’s most prestigious talent showdown”, The Shot, which is a Youtube TV series operating as a Canada-wide artist and songwriting competition. Justin is currently in the Top 18, with promise to make it quite far in the competition.
What’s more, Justin has launched a bi-weekly initiative he calls the “Private Zoom Concert Series”. These concerts, held in a private “Zoom room”, consist of Justin and a guest songwriter exchanging their songs and stories. Imagine these concerts as “songwriter’s circle meets interview”. So far, he has featured such emerging artists as Sarina Haggarty and Luc Johner
with talks of having Texas King and Emm Gryner on the show.
Looking ahead, Justin plans to enter Canada’s Got Talent and the FM96 Summer Song Challenge, as well as tour the East Coast with musician, Jesse Patrick, in the fall, restrictions pending.
